A while back, I posted that I was having problems with my 1956 Crown chewing up the speedometer gear (19 teeth). I since have installed a new speedometer cable and a recently rebuilt speedometer and still had a failure of the gear. I suspect that the transmission on my car may not be original to the car and that I may need a different speedometer gear. How can I identify the transmission in my car and determine what number of teeth my speedometer gear needs to have? Thanks in advance, Danny

On the transmission behind the shift levers should be an oval plate. The plate will have letters and numbers. If you give me these I should be able to tell you what the transmission originated from.
Here is link to a picture of the tranny. If you click on the picture with shift levers exposed you will see the plate I am referring to.

Is it possible its a 57 or later unit? They use a different speedometer gear. The earlier types just slip off the end. I had to change my 56 to a 57 up speedo cable to make it work. Top fits, no problem. Chuck in NH

57 and newer FOMs drive the speedometer off the top of the output shaft and the older models drive off the bottom.Using a 56 gear in a newer transmission will chew up the gears.The plastic gear must match the transmission.

I also have a fordomatic but the oval plate looks worn off. Are the numbers stamped into the plate or painted on...? If painted they are gone, so can the trans be id'ed at all using the casting numbers on the bell, box and tailshaft...? Ed

If your Ford O Matic is air-cooled then it is 1956 or earlier. The water-cooled FOM was 1957 and later.

All FOMs produced after February of 56 were water-cooled.

Hey Supremebeing...The FOM I have must be a pre '56, it was stated to have a 292 on it but who knows if that was the original pairing, there are no provisions for oil or water cooling lines, the gear box is 9-7\8", the tail shaft is 17-1/2" , the pan looks square and I was able to clean the oval tag off, no paint left there at all but it did have these few numbers stamped into it...48473...? Any idea on these numbers, must be an earlier type of system since everywhere else i have read it;s a alpha-numeric combo. Any help is appreciated. Wanted to rebuild and use...also noticed the inner lever on the left side is snaped off and turns freely completly around...seems like it should do that? thanks, Ed

I'm not knowledgeable enough to decipher the numbers,but I do know that Ford started building the water cooled FOMs in late February of 56.If yours has no fittings or threaded openings for fittings on the right side of the case,then it is earlier than 3/56.The only exceptions to this rule is that FOMs built for trucks had provision for a cooler,that I think was not water cooled,but an air to air cooler.I think even the 55 trucks had this.I'm not sure about the lever you refer to.I don't think it should just spin completely around. There are others on this forum that are a lot more knowledgeable than I,so maybe one of them will chime in and help you some more.

Figure out first if you have an FX or MX, then get the tag information if there is one. If the tag info is missing may be able to figure out by the torque converter, various casting part numbers, and date codes. The multi digit number mentioned in a previous post is probably the transmission serial number if it was stamped on the ID tag. Regards, Dennis

Your FOM is a FX SMALL CASE. Check this site for info http://www.charlietranny.com/FordomaticPARTS.htm The inner lever is the manual valve and the outer is the throttle valve. Is the transmission in the car or on your garage floor? The FOM was first made in 1951 and several changes were running changes so try to ID what you have. The 1955 truck FOM was water cooled.
