I need some advice....

My truck is a 1964 Ford 3/4 ton with the 292 all stock engine.  I'm not sure what gear ratio is in the rear diff. but it winds up good at 60mph, I cannot remember what Ford used 4:10's or 4:11's.  My truck sits a little higher than other 3/4 ton's of the same vintage.  I noticed it has 13 leaf springs in the rear and somebody added air shocks.  This truck can haul a load!!  The previous owner used it to haul a camper.

Here is what I'm getting at.  Will this engine handle a 20 foot gooseneck flatbed trailer?? What modifications may I make to the engine to handle the load?? The engine runs good and the truck is in great shape.  (You may see a picture of the truck by clicking on the link below.).

I can really use some advice on this one, thanks....

I think tim mcmaster {mctim} is the camper hauler master. Smile

I think the contributors here need a bit more info to give decent advice. Like what's the transmission & what kid of load are you putting on the trailer ?..

That is one nice looking slick! Yes, it will handle a 20' gooseneck within reason, provided that the trailer has brakes. A elec brake controler would be required and don't exceed the towed GVW or you may get in trouble with the DOT. I had one of these back in the day with a wrecker body that did a good job.

Good looking truck!  Assuming the truck has a granny four speed, you are not expected to see an issue with the gooseneck trailer with loads that are within reason.  This is asssuming the clutch is already in good condition.  A three on the tree standard transmission may give you some clutch issues though as you’ll want that extra low gearing afforded by the truck four speed for intial take offs.

My truck does indeed have the 4 speed with granny low.  The clutch is new with less than 1,000 miles on it. It is quite a built truck, I'm just worried about engine power.

I think with that tranny, the engine will do the job. The low-low gear is key. I have a stock 1966 F-250 (rated for 3/4 ton) with just the 240 ci straight 6 engine and I've hauled 2-ton loads with no problem.

Thanks guys for the kind comments and the advice.

Should I alter the engine a bit to gain more power?  I was thinking of all bolt on stuff like duel exhaust and a 4 barrel carb.  Any advice???

Thanks again...

The y-blocks have good torque and with the rear gear you have and 4 speed you should be set. But if you are like the rest of us here you always want to do something more- so- dual exhaust will free up the back pressure (and with some nice mufflers sound good) and putting on a good air filter will help with the breathing (a chrome one adds about 15 hp ***kidding***) but they do look better! I'd leave the carb alone for now. Then just drive it and see/feel how it works.

So for duel exhaust I need different manifolds.  Doesn't somebody here sell manifolds?  Seems I remember somebody selling Ford Y Block duel exhaust manifolds here.... (What I really need is a better memory!!)

Thanks

John Mummert has the ram horn exhaust manifolds for duel exhaust, they look good on these trucks. Headers are available also from several sources. A set of early big valve heads and a ECZ-B intake with a modern four barrel carb would add some HP and  wow factor. An ign upgrade such as Pertronics II is a good upgrade. Going deeper a cam change to a RV grind might be a good upgrade later.

Those manifolds from John are absolutely awesome!

I even had mine ceramic coated (inside & out)

You'll LOVE them!!
