The 58's that were 272 were yellow, Unsure about the 292s in 58. The 59 to 64's I think were black with red accents.
I'm 100% sure on the 55 and 56's as I have factory pictures and brochures showing this.
In his book titled Ford Pickups 1957-67, author Paul G. McLaughlin writes that 292 Ford truck engine blocks were painted red in 1958 with black valve covers and air cleaner. He goes on to say that in 1959 and 1960 the 292 blocks were black with valve covers and air cleaner, various (red, blue, black). It has been my experience that such books are not absolutely correct 100% of the time, seeing as Ford seems to have mixed and matched a lot, and you can probably find someone who swears they've seen an original engine that deviates in its color scheme....but there you have it.
I do know Ford's truck blocks were painted differently than cars.
