Felow Y Blockers, I got almost for free, a sealed package of ten Motorcraft BF-42 spark plugs. I was planning to use them on my 292, but they seem too cold. Does anyone use this spark plug on a 292? Good? Bad? What do you think?

My engine has a iskenderian cam (260X260) PN 301444, is boored 0.060 over, and has a slightly higher compression ratio than stock.

Thanks for any imput.

You’ll be fine with the BF-42 plugs for an every day Y powered driver assuming of course that the engine is in good condition.  That’s the same plug used in the majority of the 390 Fords and appears to be a middle of the road plug as far as heat range goes for the 18mm selection.  Depending upon just how much higher the compression ratio actually is, then a BF-32 may be a better fit and especially if the engine is is being romped on much more frequently.  The EMC Y entry for 2009 used the BF-32 spark plugs and the cr on that engine was 10.2:1 but this engine lived much of its life at full throttle on a dyno.  The 272 in my ’55 Customline uses Autolite 46’s which has the same equivalent heat range as the BF-42’s.

Thanks ted!!!

My engine is 6000 mile from new. The majority of use is highway, with a little city driving. The compression is 10:1 (not exact, but very very close). Now, I'm using some NGKs (AP5FS) that are equivalent to the Champion 14 heat range. They do fine at city driving, but got very white, and close to overheating after a 80 90 mile road speed driving.

Ted; I am running a +40 292 with 8:1CR 272 heads, stock cam and a 4bbl. I was told that Autolite BF82 plugs were replaced by the Autolite 46 or the AP46. I still have a couple sets of the BF82s. Will they work for me or are they too hot or too cold? Thank you for your time.

Nothing wrong with the BF-82’s in a Y stocker as the heat range is actually correct for a dead stock Y.  The BF-82’s have fallen in the same category as the BF-32’s in that sales didn’t promote making them anymore.  Going slightly colder or hotter in most instances goes un-noticed.
