Well it's summer time. Do we take off the scoop plate on the Hood or not?? Have heard both ways. Susposelly runs cooler with it on, but I think you would getmore air into carb. What does everyone think. Also just had my exhaust changed (55 T-Bird 292) , 2 1/4 pipe from manifold to back of X member and 2 Dyanamat tilted up with new 2 1/4 to below bumper, turn down tips. And have original tips thru bumper for looks. Sure sounds good and seems a little quicker, also floorboard is cooler. Steve there is enough room for a balance tube under the driveshaft, but have not put on yet. May want it quieter in future,... Thanks guys sure appreciate you all God Bless Eddie PS Do you think I will need to change jets? Blue thunder and AFB

Ford said to take it out during summer. I took mine out - most do. As far as I'm concerned, the more air into the engine compartment the better.

Oh yeah!, another tilt up muffler convert! We can start our own club.
I've tried it both ways on the block off. In the summertime (I bet it gets hotter here!) I think its better out, but frankly my heat gauge didn't prove it.
Maybe your engine will run a tad cooler now that you've opened up the exhaust a little too.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a tilt up muffler - putting it in the back where the resonator goes?

Sorry Paul - an inside story - there is an old thread from April titled "Exhaust" where we finally got to see Al's "secret weapon" exhaust system. Sounds like Eddie's on the bandwagon now. T-birds customarily have a big ol' (very hot) muffler tucked into the x-member right under your feet and seat. The birds don't have the greatest seating position and the heat just makes it worse. Some have an additional resonator that is tilted up just behind the x-member to facilitate a jump over the axle housing. The stock system is quiet and cooks your feet - not everyone's cup of tea. Al ran his set-up with 4 tube headers and a straight through pipe under the floor boards. Instead of a resonator on each side - he put in a set of "tilted" Flowmasters in place of the resonators.

Yes the tilt ups are mounted where the resonators go. Wife and I just got back from a cruise to the beach and can't believe how much cooler the cab is. Also like playing with the sound. Thanks to all. God Bless Eddie

I had flowmasters installed in the stock location below the heat shields on my '57 and I think it was a mistake. The floor gets really really hot. I'm not sure how to rectify this since my exhaust doesn't go all the way back to move the mufflers Maybe it has to? Any thoughts or fixes? - John

PunkRR Tailpipes are a good thing unless you're a fan of Carbon Monixide poisoning. At least run the out lets out from under the car into the air stream. Won't hurt the noise either. Use shields, or lower the mufflers away from the floor a couple inches. Then get some of the heat shield noise reducing material from your local upholstry shop.

James, I agree with what you say about the hood scoop, but doesn't the stock T-Bird air cleaner seal to the hood? I don't have a bird, but the scoop on 56 Victoria works great, now that I have built an air box that seals to my hood. Rob

So that would mean that my scoop is about 100% looks and in fact hurts my ability to cool the engine? I have noticed that if I drive around with the interior vents open that the car seems to run a little warmer. Does that make sense or seem like a freak occurance. Am I creating some awkward air tubulents in front of the cowl? - John

Rob,
The Bird aircleaner has a cork seal on the front 1/3 only. Don't know why it wasn't total, unless to keep the bowl from filling with water and pouring down the carb.
I don't use the block-off plate on mine, even in sub-freezing temps. Never a problem, and I even have the heat riser restricted with the truck type gasket. Doesn't overheat, so I don't worry about pos. pressure/reduced radiator flow, and on cold days when the air is dense, it runs like a scalded cat.

A little info; Took off my block off plate on 55 T-Bird hood , gained about 15 Deg. Drove in4th parade wed and never went over 185. Today had it on freeway stayed at about 185 to 190. Before removal it would go to 190- 195 sometimes would go to 200 to 210. So think i gained on it. Today was hot and running about 70 mph. Thought someone would like to know. Thanks everyone God Bless Eddie

New Punk, Just thought I would let you know, I was running the same B&M Mega scoop you have on your car and it seemed to be REALLY restrictive. Even after I washed the filter element and re-oiled it with K&N filter oil, it seemed to make the car run really rich. When I run at Columbus I would run a velocity stack with just a screen to keep the bugs out. I know the scoop looks cool, but I'm not so sure on the performance gains with it. I now have fabbed up a air box that mates & seals to the underside of my hood (I will try and take some pics), I have noticed a big difference in air flow and actually had to richen up my carb as the motor was now running lean. Just thought I would let you know. The scoop does work fine for the street, but when and if you take your car to Columbus, pull the scoop. It will help. Rob

Yes it does run rich at low RPM - kind of obnoxious. I'll have to come up with something different. Please send me some pics of how you fabed the box... Thanks!
