In the 50s movie"Thunder Road", the revenueres (in '57 Chevys) couldn't catch Robert Mitchum in his "E code" '312 57 Ford, so they layed out tack strips and caused him to crash & burn. Makes you wonder about the origins of that script.

Daniel:

Robert Mitchum wrote the script, don't know where he got the idea.  By the way, an engine shot of the '57 showed a D code air filter.  And in the scene where he drove away from his brother in town, the sound effects sounded like a 6 cylinder with split manifold and duals.  And how about the opening scene where he was running from the feds, rolled the '50, and emerged from the dust with the car undamaged?  And in the scene where the "50" got blown up, the starter was on the key switch on the left side, '51 style.  Neat show, though.  I still get the tape out and watch it again now and then.

My memory isn't what it used to be. I could swear (the picture in my mind) that when they looked under the hood of that '57, there were dual quads. Oh well.

Out of curiosity I just rented the DVD, as it had been a long time. Somehow my addled brain had combined the multi-carb open hood shot (3 dueces) in the '50 (looked like a Y-block?, could be an Olds?), with the '57 single quad shot, and came up with a merged memory image (E-code).

One thing for sure, I would love to go back in time and return with that Sun distributor machine (in like-new 1958 condition) seen in the garage where he took his '57 to get the hood/fenders replaced.

When I was in high school a few years ago, (Yeah yeah i'm young I know) there was an original sun distributor machine. I didn't really know what it was at the time, or I would have tried to get it.
