Why is the fire ring in Y head gaskets such an odd shape? Why is it not a circle instead of the odd shape? Just a dumb question.

The combustion chamber overhangs the deck surface.

Another way to say the same thing is the combustion chamber is offset from the bore.  On a Harley there is a nice circular fire ring.  Everything is directly above the bore (at least on the panheads/knuckleheads).

Well, That explains it. Guess I never put the gasket on the head only and looked at it.

When I did my T bird I just wanted to get it back together, the only other Y I have had apart was in 1961.

The fire ring has to encompass the largest chamber Ford made. That would be the -471 head that hangs way over the block. The aluminum heads follow the bore much closer and we should probably have Best Gasket make some specific gaskets someday.

Its not a problem, just wasted space.
