John "Fairlane500", I had contact with him and he is OK but things are pretty messed up down there.  Here's the message he sent me.

Tim Second series in six months, we had a 7.1 sept 4th and now the 6.3 and many other large aftershocks in excess of 4.0 the city has now sustained intense damage and is a war zone.

75 confirmed dead and 300 plus missing hoping that this number will diminish as people make contact.

Thanks for the thoughts my friend I have two americans in my home today from the US Antarctic Program that lost their lodgings, glad to be able to help a friend.

Our thanks to our USA and Australian Governments for there support

Regards JOHN

What I've seen on our Tv news looks pretty bad. Beautiful old town, real shame. Our prayers are with the NZ'ers.

Hi all,

As Tim passed on we are safe, I cant begin to thank our USA and Australian friends enough as well as the assistance from the UK, Japan and Taiwanese Urban Search and Rescue teams.

Our city is in despair but the support received from the above is quickly changing the dire situation and many positive things are happening. At only 5 km deep the 6.3 magnitude quake has caused much more infrastructure damage than the 7.1 at 30km depth we experienced on September 4th 2010. Since sept 4th there have been in excess of 4000 after shocks and this had taken its toll on many structures obviously. the 6.3 has finished them off once their structure has been weakened.

There are so many people affected this time and many more displaced from their homes.

Again our thanks go out to all those countries who have come to our assistance in a time of need

Cheers

John

It disturbs me that the people of New Zealand are not getting the coverage here in the US that the Haiti quake did.  Your country seems to be just as devastated and in need to help.

John,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you .I know we have not had a good run here in Australia over the last few months ,but it doesn't seem much  compared to what happened in Christchurch. The local radio station played  this  song the other day .Bought a lump to my throat ( and I'm not a Kiwi ).It brings tears to your eyes when the TV stations play it and show footage of  the earthquake in the background .This seems to be the unofficial NZ / Maori national anthem .The most haunting song I have ever heard .

Just a few days before the N.Z. quake there was a blurb on T.V about anti earthquake engineering. Apparently recent research has shown that some concrete building designs that were thought to be reasonably quake resistant, are now in question. One area is multi story buildings designed with underneath parking. Tests are showing that some seperater support walls in the parking areas, are not up to anything like major quakes... It is quite shocking to see what has happened to some buildings in ChristChurch.. Our hopes & best wishes to the victims & their families.
