I have a 56 ford f100 with a v8 272 y block with a 3 spd manual tranny. I have a 3 speed automatic c6 tranny and am wondering of this will bolt up if not what trannys will with the lease mods and hassle? thanks

C-6 seems like a lot of trans. for a 272 and will not "bolt right up". a C-4 or AOD would be a better choice but will still need an adaptor. I got my C-4 adaptor from Mummert for around $500 and it is a very nice kit with everything you will need, except the tourqe converter.

Adding to what Tim has said, the C6 transmissions are engine family specific and as such, there’s not one out there that is a direct bolt on to the Y without an adapter. A C4 auto trans behind the Y is a common swap with the Flat-O-Matic adapter. The original FMX, FordOMatics, and CruisOMatics are a direct bolt in if you find a complete setup already behind a Y. The FMX, FOM, & COM's behind the FE (352/390) engines will not work without a bellhousing and torque converter change. Late model AOD’s can be made to work with an adapter also but are also not direct bolt ins.

Yeah. it will "bolt-up" with a rather expensive adapter...... and a C-6 is BIG sort of like my E4OD bolted to a 292!

The AOD will bolt to the same adapter I am using..... From http://www.transmissionadapters.com/ford_y_block.htm

The only downside is that it's fairly expensive.....(what isn't?)

The AOD would probably be a MUCH better choice over a C-6 for an F-100 because of the 0.67:1 OD!

I do agree that the c6 tranny is a lot of tranny for the 272. I got it for free as well as the drive shaft and 9 inch rear end which came from another 56 f100. In regards to the c4 tranny and the 272 will I be able to use my same driveshaft and rearend or will it hve to be changed to something diff?thanks

The drive shaft will have to be changed but you might be lucky enough that your existing shaft only has to be shortened. The rear gears will likely be on the high numeric side for the auto trans but off the line performance will be very good. If you’re going to be on the highway quite a bit, then a ‘higher speed’ gear ratio will be more suitable with the automatic transmission.
