I was in the auto parts store today picking up a set of ring expander pliers and saw a ball hone. I have a conventional stone hone and remember somewhere back in the mental cobwebs that ball hones are not good and tend to make cylinder taper, bell shape, etc. worse. Is that correct?

The dingle berry hones don't do much more than remove the glaze. In my opinion, in order to actually hone a cylinder, it takes an expending hone with good straight stones and honing oil. This method will actually remove metal. With a dingle berry hone, you are lucky to even remove the glaze.
