Yes the long overdue y powered T is close to having a running engine...

after the setback we bought another engine from a friend and got it running, enough of that lets tear it apart and start making changes Smile

The new engine is a 256 merc and we are hoping to use the cam from the 292 in it...I measured the bearing journals on both cams and they both come in around 1.192 (if I remember correctly, anyhow, they appeared to be the same size) BUT the 292 cam has the grooved journal whereas the 256 cam doesnt...can I use the grooved journal cam in the merc block with its original bearings? The engine had real good, steady oil pressure so I'd like to keep them if possible

some new pics will be up soon, thanks again for all your help and patience!!

Dan:

I'm sure the grooved cam will work in the 256.  The only drawback I could see is possibly a little too much oil flow to the rockers, if that's possible.  The groove will supply a constant stream, the crossdrilled provided an interrupted flow.  Glad the Y is still in the plan.

good, that is the answer I was hopin for, should be back together tomorrow - I will try and get some new pics up ASAP

Thanks!

If there is too much oil flow to rockers just add a restrictor plug to each assembly where the oil enters from the block.Thats what I will do with mine if the new assemblys still have too much oil when I install them.

cam is going in as we speak...
By kevink1955 - 14 Years Ago
I remember (I think) that the 256 used a diffrent distributor drive gear and oil pump drive shaft, would that make the drive gear on the cam diffrent. I guess if you use all the parts from the 292 it would be ok

had heard about the dist. drive issues on the HAMB - compared both cams when I had them out and the dist. drive gears looked the same to me, pretty sure I have both style dist. so I should be okay getting the right combo in there, thanks-
By Dan - 14 Years Ago
well, we dropped the 256 dist in and the gears meshed with the cam and everything turns overs real smooth so I think we are good in that respect...

When can we see the U-Tube video of the start up? Chuck in NH
By Dan - 14 Years Ago
everything is coming together pretty good, just buttoning up all the last minute details...

should be able to see it run when we get our carb base back from re-bushing, maybe this week??

By Dan - 14 Years Ago
Well here is the next generation of our long term T project - as soon as our refurbished carb base arrives we should be ready for a test fire...

DISCLAIMER - the color is absolutely 100% copied from an engine I saw on the HAMB, I loved that color and had to have it, so we copied, hope he doesnt mind, I think its killer

my question is can we run the engine without the gen. being wired to volt. reg.? I know some alternators this is a no-no, want to double check so we dont ruin a good gen. thanks!

Looks good!  Can't wait to hear it.  I don't think you will hurt the generator but what do I know, I've been using one for an idler on my run-in stsnd for years.

cool...thanks-

I may try and talk my buddy out of one of his extra carbs to get this thing fired, getting pretty anxious!

how do I get the oil filter adaptor to stop leaking and what size freeze plugs do I need to block the holes in the heads...w00t
By Dan - 14 Years Ago
did some search on here and found that the 29/32 plugs are the ones I need, bought some and looks like they will work...any tips or tricks on getting the filter adaptor to seal up?? thanks

i don't know how to give you the link directly but may be the above will work

goto search "filter adaptor" look for Ted Eatons comment post no 49419

stuey (on a learning curve)

sugar didn't work i'll try again

For switching from the cartridge filter to a spin on filter arrangement, simply remove the old nut and flat thin plate and thoroughly remove the old gasket.  If using a used spin on adapter plate, insure that the center of the plate sits at least 1/16” above the rest of the plate when the plate is laying on a flat surface.  If it’s not slightly raised in the middle, then there’s the possibility it will leak oil.  With a new gasket in place on the block, put the adapter plate over it and with ‘TOP’ at the top, and tighten it down with the special hollow stud/nut assembly.  Install the new filter and you should be good to go after thoroughly checking for leaks once the engine is running.

Here’s another link to an article about curing oil filter adapter leaks.

Think we have it all sealed up....

It runs!

Will get some video posted ASAP, I cannot possibly thank everyone enough who helped with parts and advise on this project. I think the kids are pretty stoked on it! We dont allow cell phone use in class but I had to make an exception as a number of them asked if they could takes pics with their phones. I had almost all the kids from Freshman to Seniors involved in various aspects of the project so alot of kids got their hands on it (part of the reason it took so long to get going but I think it was a good idea). Again, I cannot thank you folks enough, we will let you see it running very soon! thanks-

Sounds good, nice project for your students. One suggestion tho, and maybe it's not a close as it looks in the video, but when the student reached across and under the radiator to start it, I cringedPinch I realize there was no fan but there are still spinning parts...
By Dan - 14 Years Ago
Student?? That's Me! Tongue  (We don't post images of the students for obvious reasons) It is not as close as it looks but I do understand and appreciate your concern...Thanks-

Good job Dan, perspiration and perserverance has paid off.

Dan:

Way to go!  Makes us proud, as we on this site have followed this project from its inception, and helped where we could.  I'm glad you bent the rules on cell phones, that was an experience that at least some of the students would save to their computers for future enjoyment of a positive part of the school curriculum.

A+ for you and your Students Dan!. And thanks for the video, most fun I've had all day!

Inspiration for my class next year! Good job. Where did you locate your engine run-in stand?
By mctim64 - 14 Years Ago
Sounds good! That is the cam we sent you, right? Smile

I hope you did your break-in run before the video was taken, keep it reved up and don't idle till the cam and rings seat.

By Dan - 14 Years Ago
Yes Tim that is the Isky cam - I love the way it sounds, thanks again for all the help! We broke everything in so I "hope" we are good to go...am using valvoline vr-1 as I read some place that it has the most zinc??

The run in stand was purchased from Speedway for WAY too much money, we had to make quite a few modifications to it to make it more usable. If I were you I woul build one, could make one alot nicer for alot less money...

Again I can't thank you guys enough for all the help with parts and advise, I know its cliche but I dont want to try and name names because I will forget someone and hurt their feelings, you guys know who you are and from the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU - you have contributed a large amount to the education of many good young people, might have even planted a hot rod seed in a couple of them!

Now, is there a thread on the forum I can search for rebuilding a starter? Dont think our pinion gear is disengaging properly??
