I was notified late last week that the place that the webserver has been located since this site was started is going away in the next couple of weeks. My guru has accepted a position with another company and so the server can no longer be located where it is. I have a few options as listed below: Shut down the site totally (not acceptable) Go with some cheap hosting and lose the forum (not acceptable) Go with a host that will support the SQL server (the forum is run on that), the catch is that this option will run about $600 a year. I have invested a lot of $ into the site over the last four + years but I can't get that kind of a bill past the head of household affairs (the wife). I refuse to make the site a "members only" place, I've seen that done and it is not what we are about. I also refuse to ad popups, adware, etc to generate $$$. We have all been to those kind of sites and know how irritating that can be. What are your thoughts?

Jim, Check out www.hypermart.net . I've been with them for years. Pretty solid and reliable. I'm no Guru though. I don't know if they provide everything you want. They do an awful lot. Basic site is free with upgrades at a reasonable cost. I think we pay $9 a month for our site. Would setting up your own server be another option? I'm not sure what that requires. Chuck

Ya, I have looked at that place among others. The stickler to the whole situation is this forum. Many hosting services (most actually) want a hefty premium to host SQL (if they even have the ability). I have checked several places including godaddy, etc. I just don't think the site would be much oif a gathering place without this forum. It is the "life blood" of the endevour.

Jim - When exactly is the server "going away"? Can you open a "Financial Forum" and publish the current state of funding - meaning where we stand with donations to hit the required $600? I always liked the bar graph at my office that showed status of the "United Way" - this will just be for the "United Y". Also maybe publish an address/p.o.box for donations to the cause? We need to be getting up a fund to support Ted with the engine project anyway. Just make the donations "money order only" to eliminate checking hassles......maybe put the money in a shoebox and dole out whatever is needed. We don't need to be an institution - just have a few bucks in the kitty when the need arises.

Jim, have you spoken with James Potter at the 57fordsforever.com forum? He's got a nice forum running there, no pop-ups or ads. Maybe he has some ideas.

Jim, What are the exact requirement we need? I did a search for "free forums" and came up with a long list. Some of them look very simular to the format we have now. Chuck

Jim, Did you check the link at the bottom of the page for the software this site is using? They have a basic package at $199 to buy the software. Then you could use any host thats compatable. Chuck Powered By InstantForum.NET v4.1.4 © 2007

We have been the free forum route, remember the hackers??? The software that I am using now was over $600 but has been well worth it. I really am not interested in changing software again as it is like starting from scratch. Still talking with Stephen (my guru), we are working on details to get this done. I'll also talk with Ted and see what he wants to do about a general fund for the EMC motor, etc.

I just talked to Ryan at InstantASP. The software package we have for the forums now is $119. He refered me to a web called www.discountasp.net. They have a basic package for $90 per year. Seems a lot more doable? He looked at our current site and said the $119 package was what we needed. Anyway food for thought or ammo for arguments sake. Chuck

Ok, first thing to Chuck. One of the main goals is to NOT change forum software again. That was painful for all of us last time! As to exactly when it is going away, it will be within the next two weeks. I have been texting back and forth with Stepehn and we are working to put together a server that three of us will go in on, so the cost may actually be less than at first thought. That will not be known for a few more days yet though, cost of hardware, tie in to the internet, etc. IF the costs are such that I can absorb them, then nothing will change, if they are too much, we may have to pass the hubcap. Nothing is going to happen today anyway, so everyone just carry on like your webmaster had good sense! I think that we are all committed to keeping this "crossroad" up and active, and we should have the rest of the particulars by the end of the week I hope. I just didn't want to run up on a brick wall and have to pull things down and you guys not know what is going on.

Thanks Jim for all your hard work and expenditures! I wish that I knew enough about computers to have a clue what you guys are talking about, but I don't. Bottom line this site has become part of my life and daily routine and I don't want too loose it. Whatever it takes, just let us know and we will support you. Same thing with Ted and the EMC project, just let us know. There are enough "regulars" here that it would only be a few bucks each and I am sure that many of them fell the same as I do.

Jim, Like all the other guys on here,I appreciate you and all you do to keep this forum going.I'm just an old farm boy that fell in love with the looks and the sound of 56 Fords when they hit the market 51 years ago,and even though I'm not interested in the racing aspect that many are,I have made this forum a regular part of my life the last couple of years and like Glen,I'd sure hate to see it go away.If and when you need to pass the hubcap, count me in.

I can help a little with funds. It sounds like you have a solution, but if you still need a host, my brother runs a hosting service.

Going by the number of folks that use this website, if even half of them put $5.00-$10.00 in an envelope and send it to you that would cover the cost and leave a little shoe box money for other situations. You have my email address, I will donate $5.00-$10.00, for me that would be one of the best automotive investments I will have ever made. Just give me a mailing address. Marty

Count me in too. Whatever it takes. It's not like you could BUY info this valuable anywhere else!
Bruce's Y-block site probably should be converted to paid subscribtion, as the pop-ups make it unusable as is. I'm sure most of his magazine subscribers would also pay double at least (if needed) to keep the issues coming.

I've been only a lurker for many months and enjoy this site and what it stands for. Now it seems that its time to get involved. I for one will pitch in to assist in keeping it going. Count me in to support when needed. I think there are enough of us willing to help, that raising money to keep the site going will be no problem.

You could take the donations a step further and make it a lottery with any excess funds, pay your $5-$10 whatever it is. Have Y block motor parts as the prizes, tappets, tappet covers, push rods, valve springs, etc, etc, Being a global thing the prize winner would have to pay the freight to claim his/her prize, if not the prize goes back into the kitty for next time.

I miss a few days and you guys fill up 3+ pages with offers of $. I don't need to tell you that I am in, I need someone to tell me where to send the cash, check, money order, pay pal or whatever to help this site. I plan on being at Ted's thiw WE and will make a personal donation to the EMC project. Jim, you should get a real warm feeling with all the good emails on this string. Just one more atta boy from me. Guess it is time for an update. I have located another server and am going in on expenses with two other guys so at this point, I may not have to pass the hubcap. I have never done this site to make $$$, you guys all know that. This site is a labor of love for the old cars and for all of the people that have benefitted from it being here. That alone is worth what is expended. I don't have hard money figures yet, but the new webserver WILL be able to run this forum, a MUST for the site. The data will begin transferring in the next week, and the switch "should" be totally transparent to you. The only glitch may be that the forums become read only for a day or so while the nameservers are updated. Otherwise, we could lose any posts that were made during the time that the nameserver is changing globally. I could explain in more detail, but no sense in that! The bottom line is, we will continue on and with any luck, my commercial sites (sites I maintain for paying customers) will mostly offset the additional costs of the new server. Thanks for your support, I am really humbled by the offers. Heck, I could take the money and retire!!! As Colin Date has told me many times, the Y-Block "club" is the most ardent and tight knit group that he has ever seen in his years of being involved with cars. I can easily believe that.
