last fall I did a post about no park in my 55 Well I remove the pan this afternoon and the cotter pin on the rod that goes from the detent to the pawl is gone/ my ? is has any one replace both cotter pins with out removing the value body / if the value body has to come out what kind of trouble can I get in too? I have the ford shop manual and it doesn't sound to bad

It's no big deal to remove & replace the valve body.

Just be sure to replace it as it came off,and tighten all the screws snugly.

Important to keep everything clean.Dont overtighten fasteners.

You could try to replace the pin and cotter pin without removing the valve body. It will be very tight. If you must remove the valve body look in your shop manual to see which bolts you must take out to remove the valve body from the trans casing, some of the bolts hold the layers together and not necessary to remove as some check balls could fall out.



Pay close attention to where the shift lever fits into the shift valve spools as they need to be put back exactly the same. Do not force on the tubes as they may leak afterwards if become bent. They are a snug hand fit.



Do not work in a dusty location as dirt is a real enemy to automatics.



Have an inch pound torque wrench to re-tighten the valve body to the case.
