Day ended with a Boom

Just a note: yesterday evening I was working building some headers and had the first legs tacked on to the flange and was on the 3rd pipe 3 welds away from the engine when it went boom. evidently I had a temp gas can above the elevation of the carbs and some fuel must have been dripping and when the base got some fumes with an open exhaust valve it ignited. I dont think it hurt anything but my oil breather cap ended up on my garage door header 20' away and it popped my valve cover gaskets out. Luckily it didn't pop the valley cover gasket out.

The other side I made a block off plate for the ports out of tin. Just a little wake up call.

Bill:

If it blew out the valve cover gaskets and blew off the filler cap, it was a crankcase explosion, not an intake explosion.

I agree John, but I just cannot think of how a spark could have ignited it.

Bill:

You never know when welding where sparks can go.  Were you arc or gas welding.  Splatter is common with arc, and even when gas welding sometimes pieces of slag fly off from the molten puddle.  If a spark got near either crancase breather, well, you know the result.
