Ulcer time, Just bought a 54 Crestline Victoria from out of state. car seemed to run great, but I noticed the radiator was empty. Put in 1 gallon of anti-freeze and 1 gallon of water and almost immediately water mixed with oil began running out the draft tube, on front on 239. Spoke to guy I bought the car from and he seemed surprised, right. Way too much water for a head gasket I mean it was coming out almost as fast as i put it in. Could there be a broken /cracked passage in the timing chain housing and water from water pump just pouring down into the front of the pan? I'm sick and hope someone has seen this before. I need some help or at least someone to talk to that may have seen this problem before. Big time ulcer time.

Sounds like a cracked block.Pour coolant in one end and it runs out the other is NOT a small problem.Dont feel bad.I bought mine from pics only and sellers description. Was not as described.Start looking for a good used motor. You can use any of 239,272,292 or 312.Good luck!

Tommy:

It is possible for the problem to be in the timing cover, allowing the water to leak into the pan.  I once worked on a 239, put 292 head gaskets on it and water leaked into the pan but actually leaked into a cylinder, then past the rings to the pan.  Yours seems to leak faster than past the rings.  Maybe you can take the pan off, put water in it and see where it's leaking.

I agree it seems bad. If it were me, I think removing the intake and valley cover to have a look around would be my first step. If the engine runs smooth and doesn't steam out the exhaust, that indicates the coolant isn't getting into the cylinders. No coolant leaking out on to the ground means that the crack isn't external. There might be a way the coolant is moving from the crossover into the heads and into an oil passage. Next I think the pan would come off and then the heads searching for the leaking area. You never know, you might get lucky. As John suggested a timing cover could be the problem due to corrosion or some previous work on the engine.
