Hello all, first time posting here, not sure if this is the correct section or not. I have a 58 fairlane custom 300 with a 292 2bb. Was sitting in a barn for quite a while, still runs strong but has some oil blow-by & the distributor is locked up, so it basically cant be timed. My plans and space to work on this car fell through recently due to a loss in the family so i thought i'd reach out and hopefully find some Ohio connections. If anyone can help please respond or send me a PM and i can give more details of what id like to do with the car. Thanks. pics attached

The car looks pretty good. How bad is the blow buy? Before getting involved in a rebuild, suggest doing a compression test. Is the blow by mainly out the bottom vent? Check the oil filler cap which also doubles as the crank case venting intake. Often they are neglected & completely plugged up. Clean it well or replace if to bad. If the engine has the lower drivers side vent cannister, it also has a horse hair filter in it. Check & replace if needed. Apply a good penetrant to the Distributor base & let soak for a couple of days. Try again to move it. If no success, soak again & "tap lightly" the base with a lite hammer, to set up resonance.. Do not beat on it!!

Thanks for the response. the blow by IS mainly out of the bottom vent, no canister down there. But the oil filler cap does smoke a bit too. And smokes a lot after you turn the engine off. Like i said, it runs super strong, i was just told by my Uncle that it would eventually need a rebuild. I need a new transmission, the 2 speed it has in it is just not cutting it. Still havnt decided on a c6 or a 4 speed. I will try the penetrating oil with the distributor, the engine wont stay running at idle no matter what you do to the carb, but im assuming its just out of time. I dont know much about the engine other that the fact that it has G heads, which my uncle told me are good. They are reinforced so they can be milled more? Anyway, between the blowby, distributor and wanting a new tranny, i was just figuring on doing the engine too.

your trans is a 3 speed.

Well there was some debate about that. My uncle who knew his stuff knew that it should be a 3 speed, but from looking at the housing and the way it shifted, he ended up deciding that it was a 2 speed that somehow made it out of the factory like that or it was switched somewhere along the line. It basically has no first gear, he told me about an old hot rodder trick to get it into first. Something like you had to start of in drive then kick it into low. But im not sure. Its REALLL sluggish so i figured it would be better to swap it out

Is the transmission all aluminum? If so it's a later 2 speed. I went for the AOD conversion and am real happy with the extra gear. All good advice on getting the car to run. If you go careful on the distributor it will eventualy come loose. Check the carb bowl for dirt and float setting too. Chuck in NH

58; What is marked on the shift quadrent? Does it have a seperate low position? If so you can start there & shift up! I'm not sure what Auto trans or option was used in 58s.
