I just set the engine into my 1954 Customline, things are bolting up quite nicely. However the old 239 had this mount on the front of the engine that bolted to the core support. Should I reinstall this part? It won't fit on my 292, I could make it fit if I changed the timing covers from the 239 to the 292. I just wondered how important, or critical this part was.

Most people, with the side mount engines just leave them off. They were a sort of steady rest carried over from the truck front mount. I think Ford discontinued them sometime in 1956/57.

Most of us leave it off when redoing a motor.Just make sure your side mounts are in good condition. As mentioned they were discontinued after 56.Sounds like a real nice swap you are doing. The old girl wont know what hit her when you get it running!

The 54 steady rest at the front will not work on a later engine because of the difference in front balancers. You have to use a 55 or later steady rest if you want to use one (they bolt up to the 54 frame mount). I am using it on my 54 (312) because it cannot hurt and might help.

Your option if you want to use one.

I have photos posted to my facebook, if there was a way to cross link them I would, unless someone knows how to.

Sorry couldn't get any photos, but how about a Youtube link to show my hard work. The rest of the car needs work, but the drive train should be solid now. Here's the link:

Sounds good. If faded paint is the worst of it you scored a decent car there. The great part is now you can drive it while you do the rest. Chuck

Oh it needs a few things yet, the car is straight, but it does need quarters and rockers, and upholstery but not to scared of that. I only paid $175 for the car about 5 years ago, so to drop a few hundred into it to get it nice isn't to painful. I had plenty of engines, and a couple transmissions laying around, and needed something to do this spring till I could get back on my 1936 Ford pickup.
