How can you tell the 292 from the 312 without tearing into them ??? Is there a "EASY" way ?
By PF Arcand - 14 Years Ago
Unfortunately, no. The castings are the same, some casting marks are more likely but not guaranteed. If the engine is off the transmission, a shallow 5/16" dia dot on the rear crank flange will I.D. a 312. But not all are marked this way. Rod caps are marked ECZ. A 3.80 bore or bigger is an indication but not a guarantee either. The crank may also be marked ECZ. Main journals are approx 1-5/8 in diameter. Go to www.ford-y-block.com for more info

Paul:

I think you mean the main journals are 2 5/8", not 1 5/8.  Finger must have hit the wrong key.  The main caps are marked ECZ as well on a 312.  Don't want to lead the new folks astray, do we?

Well, I have a guy interested in  buying one of my Y block engines . But he wants to be certain its a 312. I have no idea how to tell, other than the P code on the v.i.n. And who knows if its the original engine.

If the inspection cover is off the trans(manual) you can see the crank flange from the bottom and look for 312 dot but thats as close as you'll get without the pan or heads off.

Except for a few very rare occasions, you can eleminate most blocks being a 312 by looking at the casting numbers. Look at Mummerts site and you will see what I'm talking about.

I looked at the Mummerts (sp.) website and its some very interesting reading. I also noticed the finned Thunderbird valve covers on the engine. The car i purchased has these on it and are in very good condition. What are these worth ????

Oh, not too much.  I have a nice set of chrome covers if you want to trade.  Kidding of course BigGrin .

The T-Bird catalogs sell these for about $400.00 for the pair new.  These valve covers are popular and usually sell $250-$350 used.
