On a stock or even mildly modified 292, a Ford/Autolite 4100 caburetor is hard to beat, IMO.  These were original equipment on many FoMoCo products in the '50s, '60s, and '70s.  When the performance oriented Holleys hit the market, enthusiasts (me included) tossed the mundane "cracker box carburetors" in the trash.  Now, older and a little bit wiser, gear heads have come to appreciate the functional beauty of those carbs.  Check out the swap meets, yard sales and Craig's list, etc. for a good rebuildable unit.  They are easy to rebuild and almost fool proof.  If you find a rebuildable 4100, NAPA/Echlin and Hygrade/Standard Motor Parts make excellent kits at reasonable prices.  Good information on part numbers, spec.s and tuning, etc. is readily accessable on the web as well.
