Im sure I asked the question ages ago and not come across anything in the meantime and search didn't come up with anything. I thought that finding an aftermarket front [and rear] anti swaybar for my '56 Townie would have been easy... what gives??!!

You might see if ADDCO is still around, or they could be fabricated from bar stock.

You might try Quickor Suspension in Portland, OR (503-654-2175). I've had good luck with them in the past. They made a front bar for my '50 Mercury from photos and measurements I supplied as it was something they didn't have a pattern for.

Thunderbird Southwest in Texas has some heavy duty ones, front and rear. I called to make sure they still sell them before I posted this. I could not find the bars, or much of anything on their website, but it has contact information.

I run both front and rear swaybars on my 57 ranch wagon and a Buddy has a front sway on his 56 Sedan all of them are from thunderbirds southwest and were great quality and easy installs.

I was stumbling through the Summit online catalog and found a set for my 57 bird by accident, 11/8 front and a matched rear, possibly there are some for pass cars.

Talkwrench, I think from memory that you are here in Australia try Fulcrum (used to be selby's) they sold me a front for my mainline about a year ago. It has tightened up the front considerably $370 plus frieght. FULCRUM SUSPENSIONS & SELBYS SWAYBARS

Just a note on Sway bars, which is an inaccurate description to start with.. It's often not a good idea to go over board with a much heavier "anti roll" bar on just one end of a chassis. It can have unintended handling effects. For one thing a very heavy bar, particularly on the back of a car, can cause loss of control on hard bumps. And they can effect the amount of understeer or oversteer in a car. So, before say installing a heavy bar on the front & one on the back, it's best to do some research into chassis handling. A number of books on that subject can be found fairly easily. One recent example is the Goodguys gazette for August 2011..

Paul, I'm pretty sure the "Anti-Roll" bar folks will be able to give him advice on the correct sizes. I don't know if the '56 had ANY bars from the factory, so medium or small diameter unit will make a significant improvement. Well that and good shocks.

The 56 Sedans have a small one , just seems so small to be effective, I have fitted urathane bushes and it did make a difference. Paul, your right you have to be careful going overboard, however I have found with all the cars Ive had and fitted heavier bars to , the benefits outweight the negatives on it. Lets face it if you knew exactly what springs and shock match etc etc you would hardly need anti swaybars, but how much money and time do you put into it? I recently fitted the cheapie Addco ones to my Cuda [believe it or not was cheaper to send the heavier Addco ones to Australia than the lighter tube style??], I didnt go overboard with the rear one and I have to say its the best money Ive spent. It goes like a kart! But as Paul said its very rigid now and you have to be careful on high speed rough corners.. BUT any other corners its not a wollowing whale. I just didnt think it would be so hard ot find one for a 56 sedan, but with everthing else you can get, geez??!!

Warren called Fulcrum, Nope couldn't help. He said they bought about a year ago and a lot of old stuff inc patterns never got handed over.

Forget Quickor - they suck. I had to get the Oregon Attorney General after him after he wouldn't make good when he sent me the wrong one.
Southwest for sure.

56 wagons and Couriers(probably your Utes) all were built with a stiffer sway bar than your sedan.If you can find one of those bars,they make a huge difference in the handling.

Paul, finding those wagon ones are as rare as rocking horse stuff around these parts.. Gone are the days where you might find one upturned in the bush.. Rick any suggestions?

Talkwrench, Fulcrum bought out Selby about a year ago. I missed out on several cheaper bars that were offered through ebay. Thinking that I could buy directly from Selby for much the same money. I wasn't aware that selby was being bought out. My bar came from Brisbane not Sydney. I'm sure after the merger. I sent you directly the emails when I was dealing with them. It may give you some leverage but after all we are a small part of the market. It's nice to buy local when you can. There are other options. Makes me kind of glad I got mine when I did.
