Broken tab on torque converter snout

While sliding the torque converter onto the input shaft splines, one of the little tabs on the end of the snout broke off. I suspect these are there for alignment purposes and don't affect the operation of the transmission since the two stages of splines insure a positive fit. Is that correct?

Marc, the 2 tabs drive the front pump.

Yikes! Looking at it closer, I can see wear on one edge of each tab. The one that broke looks like metal fatigue. It's a fairly flimsy arrangement. The broken piece fits up perfectly at the fracture; would you think it could be welded?

No, get another one, welding and remachining is going off on an expensive tangent. list here what style of converter, where you live  and someone may have oneTongue
