i have a 292 Y block,c2ae ,ecz-g 5752 heads,was originally a marine conv.,I have converted it to a truck engine,having trouble getting it to run right.It originally had a mallory marine dist.no vacumn advance,Ichanged it to an after market 57 dist from adv.auto.currently running without vacumn advance,was popping through the exhaust.I also installed a different crank. pulley with timing marks,dist set at about 4degrees bftdc.I wondered if the marine conversions used a different cam than the trk.& pass. versions thanks RED

Did you have the timing cover off? If it has a chain you are ok, if its gears then its a reverse rotation engine. You would have to change the cam and add a timing chain setup. Chuck

it's running,has good power,hard to get smooth idle,just curious if dearborn marine used a different cam,short block is standard Ford parts,seems they used different components ,C2AE block ECZ-G heads

Have you tried more timing like 10Deg? 4 seems low. The marine engines seem to have a mix of parts but often the ones we look for. Like the G heads or 1.5 rockers. Not sure why. With the same rotation the cam should be standard. Are you sure all the cam lobes are good? Also the condition of the valves. I'm sure some of our better trouble shooters will be on here with comments this evening. Chuck

You say, popping thru the exhaust? Sounds like a sticky exhaust valve or the valve gap is too tight. Should be about 19 hot or say 20 cold to start.

checked valves twice .0019 timing may be the problem.converting to truck motor from marine conversion I changed the crankshaft pulley,bought one for a 292 y on line with vib.damper w.timing marks.is it possible there are different pulleys with different.timing marks for Y blocks

There is a good possibility that the damper ring has slipped on that used pulley. If so, the timing marks are now in the wrong place.
