Been reading here and all over for a while, it appears I have an uncommon block.  Motor is in 56 Customline 2 door sedan which was born in Long Beach as a six cylinder.  I have no information on how this block came to be in this car.  I read more than post and certainly appreciate this forum for the knowledge and advise shared.  I'll make this post short as an introduction, took about twenty blind attempts with the camera but did get this image.

Welcome to the site, according to Mummert this would be a late replacement 312 block. Possibly orginally for marine use. Must be pretty rare as John states that he has only seem one B7ME block before.

B = decade, 7 = year of decade, M = Mercury, E = engine family, However I have found numerous 60's ford cars with the M casting so they must have cast extra Mercury blocks and just used them up in the Fords.

Thanks for the welcome, I feel like I know most folks from spending time reading (to much wife says).  A little more info on the B7ME, heads are ECZ-G which is good and possibly original with block.  The manifold is an ECZ-9425A and the carb is a manifold staining Holley 4150, 1850-9.  The manifold has a spacer to carb but not sure if it is tapered or stepped.  Runs good doesn't smoke, but drips all over, it was purchased in WA and driven home.

Haven't done much to it yet, the point gap narrowed on the trip home and after reset I found that there are two timing marks, I assume one at tdc and I used the other for initial distributor set, which works OK, runs and idles fine.

I started my post here because I do have questions, first is after determining tdc is there a degree calibration which can be attached to damper for a true understanding of where the timing is set and to view exactly how it responds at total advance?

Check the diameter of the balancer. There is a Ford small block balancer timing tape that is available that is very close to the Y balancer. I have used it for the 312 in my 54.

Thanks for the info, not sure what I was Googling but ford timing tape got it done.  I bought the Jegs, $10 to the house.  My calculation puts it real close, a couple degrees off at 180 and a couple more at 270, those can be measured and marked so it should work fine thanks.

I've been taking a look at the externals of this engine, plugs were OK however gapped inconsistently between 22 and 34, a little dark and some oiling on threads.  Rockers are ECG-6564-B2 which I belive is the desired 1.54.  Took off the dripping Holley and found the spacer to be tapered, however a homemade gasket really didn't help the airflow.
