My points burned badly right near the end of  the Stowe Vt car show Parade which unfortunately lasted 2 hrs at idle. I managed to make it back to my motel & decided I would change them this morn as I had a few spares in the trunk.  Well lo & behold they were completely different. My engine is supposed to be a 272 Engine.

The mounting holes on the base are appx across from one another. My spares were not , The arms on them have an offset on them, so they would not work. So assuming got me in trouble again! I really did feel like those first 3 letters.  I did find a used set that I cleaned up enough to get me home.  Has anyone come across this & let me know what I have got, as I would like to go to an electronic change-over and I would want to make sure I had the right mount??  I also had a spare distributer in the trunk & that also had the offset points in it.      Please help as I don't want to get in this situation again!!!   What is the differences or changes, yrs, are of the Distributers?    Thanks, Mike

Is it possible that you have points for the 55/56 dizzy and the 57 and later dizzy? I am not sure the point sets are different, but this may be the reason for the two different sets.

The 55/56 dizzy has springs on top of the points plate. The 57 and later do not (all underneath). I believe that the 57 and later is bigger than the early one. Some one has a listing of the numbers on the dizzy. If you can get these and post them I am sure somebody can help you further.

'54-'56 used the straight points, '57 and later use the offset ones.  I doubt if your distributor cap and rotor will fit the later spare distributor either.

I'm curious to know what would have caused your points to burn.

What year is your car?

Hey Mike;;   You want to be sure and replace the condensor, a bad one can burn points,  also if your car is 12 volt the resistor may be giving trouble. Hoping???    God Bless   Eddie

Sorry we didn't meet up at the show Tom, I was also looking forward to seeing you. I was parked on the far west corner up near the road. Friday I got there around Lunchtime. I probably should have contacted you before-hand.  On my hood, I had purchased some rebuilt hinges from SMS out of Champlain NY which is advertized in Hemmings.  They were excellant & re--pinned. I had the bodyshop take the fenders off & replace them.  My friends at the shop found out that there are some serrated washers missing though . I think they go between the shoulder bolts from the hinge to the hood & then the bolts are wired together.  I also could use some help on this if anyone has come acrossed it!!!!!

Thanks for the info guys. I will get the #'s off it soon & post it on here.  I did buy a straight set at a garage nearby but they were a tad bit too long. More confusion!

I have noticed some Petronix on Ebay from the years 1957 to !973 & they look like they have an offset so I am thinking mine is a 54 to 57.  Anymore Info would be appreciated!
