hi there

just a couple of questions

1.  what are the 2 threaded holes just above the pan rails on the passenger side for? round about where the main bearing webs are

2.i have one of mr Mummerts add on pulleys. now the heavy duty crank washer hits the 2 mounting bolts. is the procedure to grind a couple of notches?

must go now NZ / France are about to kick off

The two holes are for clips to hold transmission cooling lines to rad. Have not seen one of Mummerts dampers so I'll say that grinding a notch would not be a problem, but I would fill better if you asked John.

thanks Glen

i don't think i'd ever got the transmission clips and not knowing i've routed my lines via two flexy hoses to the chassis.

too late on notching the big washer i've done it . looks ok took quite some time and dulled a couple of carbide burrs it's real hard

thanks for the info i've learnt something new

Great question, I've never given those holes much thought but never new what they were for either. I dont think I've ever seen a Y with the cooling line clips installed. Was the idea early on and done away with? I've torn appart a lot of Y's without seeing them.  Chuck

My '55 292 has the same threaded holes, and I believe that the water cooled transmission didn't come out until mid '56, at least on t-birds. Anyone disagree?

Interesting point.  Perhaps they were some type of fixturing holes for block machining at the factory, and just happened to get used for the transmission line clips.

Those are used to mount block to engine stand. Here you can see old engine stand which uses T54L-6005-E tool to do it. http://twicelucky.blogspot.com/2009/03/kr-wilson-engine-stand-finally.html There is also tool T54L-6005-D which was on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/KRW-KR-Wilson-Engine-Stand-Adapters-?cmd=ViewItem&item=120776459228&vxp=mtr

And some pictures from the first site

I always thought they were for exactly what John says. A machining jig.

Those stands are neat. I think I have a vague memory of the side mounts from way back but had completely forgotten them. The bottom one pictured with the two curved pipes looks like the setup we used for the air cooled Volkswagens. Cool stuff on this site! Chuck

Stu, Ford deleted the washer when the add-on pulleys were installed.

I've seen the threaded holes in the block used to attach the ground strap from the block to the frame. Don't know if that was the original purpose.

In the 57 shop manual pg 1 62 there is a picture of the engine bracket holding an engine with the head of the engine stand.  Those holes are tapped 5/8" UNC and pretty deep,  I always thought they were overkill for trany linesCrazy

the holes are right into the main web area so its plenty strong but a fully loaded Y-block hanging on two bolts would worry me. i'm nervous enough to always use 4 ARP bolts in the bell housing.

Teros, thats one heck of an engine stand and an eye opener to see it spins end over end.

John, i did wonder if that might be the case but i'm a bit "belt and braces" so i'll keep the washer and check how much thread is engaged and maybe look for a longer screw.

Doug:

If you'll check the block in your Bird, I think you'll find those holes are tapped 7/16-14, not 5/8-11.  But you're right, that's overkill for trans line clips.  I'll revise my thoughts, they are probably there for engine stand use for assembly at the factory, not machining.

The first 56 steel convertor transmission cooler lines had two flex hoses at the transmission and two flex hoses to hook to the cooler on the radiator with two steel lines that were bolted to the right side inner fender liners, so did not use the bolts on the engine for mounting.

I have never seem an original 56 with the transmission cooler lines bolted to the engine. Maybe came out later year. The 57's were that way.The steel convertor came out on the later 56's, I remember reading December 56. The earlier 56's were air cooled.
