A local shop is rebuilding an EBY/256 motor. The heads are bad and need replacing. I think I recall reading that 272/292/312 heads may not fit 239 motors, but what about a 256? Will they need to locate specific heads for that motor?

All Y heads will bolt to the block.  The 239 used very small intake ports, so later intakes are iffy on gasket seal.  The 256 ports were a little larger.   The other consideration is compression ratio.  Later ('60s heads) are low compression on 292s typically, would be even lower on a 256.  But at least you are not tied to finding 256 heads.

Thanks John. I thought the 239 blocks needed special heads/head-gaskets because the water ports didn't match later versions? If you used a later intake manifold along with 272-312 heads/gaskets on a 256 block, everything should line up OK then?

Daniel,

I have at least one maybe two sets of the 256 style heads (with the freeze plugs in the head). Could bring them to Colombus. Make a decent offer? Chuck

Chuck,

Thanks , but it turns out no one is willing to spend any $ (256 out of a junker). Shop will just re-ring and make do with heads they have.
