Hello new here and wanted to ask a question. I have a 1958 Ford Ranchero and I was wondering if I could mount my YBlock using a front mount(1962 truck) and do away the stock motor mounts originally that came with the Ranchero, the reason for this is because i love the "horn" style exhaust and to use those i would have to get rid of the mounts on both sides of the engine. will it work? has anyone done this before?

I believe that the steering box also gets in the way. If not, what you propose probably could be done. It will require some fabrication. The 55/57 Tbirds were mounted in this fashion, but they had "steady rests" on each side of the engine, right around where the side mounts would have been. It is possible that these might not get in the way though.

I think you would also have to get rid of the tubular crossmember, which is the rear mounting point of the lower A arms.

Howdy,

I am mounting the 292 in my 55 F-600 and eliminating the front and bellhousing mounts....... (I have no bell housing mount on my E4OD)

I'll use the side-mounts and tail-shaft mount on the transmission. (I'll probably build my own mounting scheme though and NOT use the OEM mounts......so I'll probably use "biscuits".

Cheers,

Rick

Sorry for the crummy pictures... I used my phone with ambient lighting!

Those are Mummert "Rams-Horns" and are ceramic coated (inside and out) by Performance Coatings in Auburn Wa. http://www.performancecoatings.com/

The front mount is only there to locate where I want the engine to go. I'll remove it when I get the side mounts built and bolted to the frame rails.

Here you can sort of see the relative locations of the side mounts and the exhaust flanges.I'll locate the side mounts with more than enough room to "miss" the down-pipe.

Left side of the engine showing the oil filter and the hole where the steering box goes.

Your frame rails may be a different width than a truck (34") . I don't know where your steering box is. Mine will be REALLY close to where the oil filter (normally) goes. I'll relocate my oil filter to a remote (frame-mounted) one.

Here is something to consider with regards to engine/trany mounts. Remember that FoMoCo was aware that the Flathead engine/trany in '49 - '53 sagged when the engine was supported by the water pumps in the front and the tranny in the rear. They designed the Y's bell housing mount bolts to be above and below the crank centerline. Some bell housings don't do this. So if you are using an adaptor and bellhousing with bolts at and above the crank CL and you support the engine at the front a'la the truck and the rear of the trany you may be overstressing the bell housing. Supporting the engine near the mid point with something like the pass car mounts will greatly reduce the stress on the bell housing.

Agreed. That is why I will not be using the front mount.
