I'm trying to find out if an Autolite 4100 1.12 is too much carb for my 1957 312. I saw somewhere Ted Eaton did a study on this. Where can I find that? Forgive me, I'm a newbie.

The 1.12 carb is supposed to be 600 CFM, which some say is too big for a stock 312. I know of people that are running 600 CFM Holleys on a stock 312 with no apparent problems. I am not sure about gas mileage though, but they are not complaining.

Remember that the secondaries on all Autolite 4100's are vacuum operated. They open in response to the venturi vacuum generated by the engine in the primaries, there is no mechanical linkage. Autolite/FoMoCo would have designed the diaphragm-spring to keep the flow through the venturis sufficient to maintain the mixture in the correct range. So if the engine will not generate sufficient vacuum then the secondaries will not open fully keeping the mixture OK.

As a practical matter, I had a 1.12 4100 on a 301 inch Y in my truck and it worked fine.

Is this article mentioned above, regarding the carb tests online somewhere? OR would someone be so kind as to scan it in & email it to me?

I just went to the Y-Block Magazine site, clicked on "Back Issues" and the Issue #97 is not listed. So, a scan of the carb tests in an email would be greatly appreciated.

Tony, Ted's just over near Waco... why not drive over there with a bag of breakfast tacos and make his acquaintance and get the straight story direct?

Tony; maybe someone else will scan & send it, but in case they don't, briefly tested on Ted's moderate 322" test mule, the stk Autolite 1.08 tested 5th out of 16 various carbs, including some that were modified. The only small carb (under 600cfm) that was better was the L1848 Holley 465 cfm. & only by a slim margin. The two Autolite 1.12s tested 8th & 12th, the last one was a modified.
