Hello all, I'm new to this site with a 58 F-100 292 Y-block (Auto); which my wife and I have had for several years.  I'm trying to track down an oil leak and am unsure of what I am looking at.  There's a pick up tube coming from the oil pan to some sort of pump located on the driver side of the engine compartment.  I was hoping someone could tell me what this part is.  I dont think its a remote filter or cooler as theres a screw on filter just above the oil pan.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is the engine oil pump, the tube runs through the side of the pan and has a pickup that sits in the sump of the pan.

Welcome to the site..............that's the engine oil pump. What side of the engine do you think the leak is?...or is it front or rear? How big a leak, just a few drops after sitting awhile? A leak at the top side of the engine is also possible The valley cover under the intake manifold or valve cover gaskets can leak and drip down the back or sides of the block and make it appear to be from somewhere else. At the tube going into the oil pump is a compression rubber washer that seals the tube to the pump. A slight tightening of that big fitting can help a small leak....too much tightening can destroy it. The rear main seal is notorious for being a trouble spot..........not an easy fix. Try out the search function here, most of these issues have answers, but it's a lot of digging and reading.  If you can narrow down the area you think is the trouble, you will find help here.  Barry L

Thank you for the reply's.  The leak seems to be coming down the back of the block from either the valley pan or the valve covers, but the oil pump is also covered but then I did'nt know it was the oil pump.  Once I get it all degreased and cleaned up i'll be able to tell better where the leak is from.  Thanks again!!
