I just found out that I have the wrong rear seal retainer. I have an ECG-6335-A, and think I need an ECZ-6335. There is another 312 engine at my machine shop and we compared them. The ECZ has a larger ID and wider channel for the seal. The part number on the ECZ seal is not clear. Are the billet retainers better than the factory aluminum retainers? I also only have 1 12 point bolt, I assume the bolts for the retainers are all the same. Thanks,

The 312 uses a wider retainer. It is ECZ. I have an extra and it says ECZ. I got one of the billet retainers and they did not impress me. In fact, I had to modify it because it hit the cap.

I have seen bolts that were allen head...I, think if I had the choice I would consider putting in allen head...Something else to look out for, you should have thin washers under each bolt for the seal retainer...the profile or width of the washer is very small maybe a 1/16th of an inch...these will help the seal retainer from leaking they are important.... I have heard that the new billet alum. retainers are better then the orig. most likely because they are more rigid....But I never held one in my hand so I don't know for sure?.... Jeff

I have used a few of the billet rear seal holders. I got 2 that were not made correctly. What isn't obvious about a Y is that the crank is not centered in the main cap register. The retainers I got had the seal centered and had a definite mismatch to the block. Look them over carefully.
I believe the 12 pt bolts are the same for 292/312. Some engines had Allens
