I am in need of some help with my Firehouse Project, me along with 3 other members are in the process of repairing our 1957 Ford F-800 Firetruck which was towed back to the house with a broken camshaft, cracked block and Bent valves. The engine we had in the Truck was a 317ci Lincoln Y block, it is not the original 368 but it did the job. We now cannot locate any Lincoln Y blocks in our area and only have Ford Y blocks to choose from.. Will a 312 Y block bolt up to our Bellhousing, or are the Patterns Different from the Lincoln to Ford?

If you decide to go with a FT motor I have a bellhousing and front mount which might fork with a FE,I do know where some Lincoln Y blocks are but they have been in the open and probably got some water in them.

A Ford Y block Bell housing is a different pattern than what you have. You may be able to find a heavy truck that has a 292 and the same transmission as in your F-800. If that is the case, you could use the Ford Y Block with the matching bell housing and bolt to your existing transmission. By 1957 heavy trucks should have transitioned to the 302/332 Lincoln based engine rather than the earlier 317. Trucks never used the 368 version. Finding a good running 332 is not easy, however, the best source would be used Fire trucks from 57 to 63.
An easier option than adapting a Y Block would be to find a heavy duty FE 361/391, There should be plenty of those out there. The Lincoln Y block and the FE bell housing bolt pattern is very close

The 317 wasn't the original motor, in fact I have no idea what was originally in the truck, I was told it originally had a 332 or a 368 engine in it. I am very interested in the 361/391 option, how close are the bellhousing patterns? Would I be able to modify our existing bellhousing or find another one to fit the T-98 Borg Warner? How about the motor mounts are they the same? I found information on a ford 390 engine, are they the same as the 391?

Unless you change bell housing the 312 will not fit. That could be an issue since it appears that you have a hydraulic cluch mechanism. Bell housing for the Ford FE series 390 engine is a different bellhousing than the 312 and also your current engine. Where are you located? There are some 368 cores here in Maryland that I am aware of. Oldmics

I am located in Connecticuit, I am just curious about what RB said about the 361/391 engine.

Oldmics (11/16/2011) That could be an issue since it appears that you have a hydraulic cluch mechanism.
Most Ford Y-Block truck bell housings have a mount for the hydraulic cylinder.

All the Ford FE series engines have the same bolt pattern, 332, 352, 360, 361, 390, 391, 406, 427, 428.

The Truck originally had a 332 Y block Truck engine, I talked to one of the old timers who drove the truck when it was new. What would we need to adapt a newer 391 engine to our existing T98 Transmission?

Finding a T-98 bellhousing for almost any Ford V8 shouldn't be too tough. Ford used T-98's well into the late 60's, probably longer. I had a 67 F250 with FE and T-98.
332 Lincoln truck engines turn-up but usually there isn't much interest in them. If you want to keep it original just be patient.
The FT series were very similar to FE's but had different intake manifolds, steel cranks with larger snout. For some reason the heat cross-over passage from head to intake is in a different location.
If it is going to be a show vehicle a standard FE would probably be fine.

The truck will be a Show truck, but we plan on using it to Pump for car washes or fundraisers. I am hoping to get a FE or FI motor.

I would go on the hunt for a 391 FT motor. Get the whole motor from a F700 or larger truck including the bellhousing. It will be a bolt in or very very close. The tranny will bolt up and you should be able to use the bell mounts as well as the front engine mounts. Make sure the bell has the slave mount, They made 2 types and I believe the latter one has the mount. If you need more info contact me and I`ll try to answer your questions.

I located a 391 FI online with a bell housing, flywheel and clutch in running condition. Going to pick it up this weekend, will post pics if I get it. Thanks for all of your help!
