Bought a 312 short block

I recently bought a 312 short block.  It is standard bore and am thinking about rebuilding it.  I was going to get cleaned up and have it flux tested for cracks. Would you all recommend   having it sonic tested  eventhough it is standard bore?  Any other things to check out would be appreciated.

Absolutley get it checked sonically.

I went thru 2 standards and one .030 over block till I got one good one.

The keeper was one of the standard bore blocks BUT it needs to be bored.040 for the rebuild.

Just cause its standard does not mean its a keeper.

If it's std bore, I don't know about having it sonic tested, but having it mag particle tested for cracks is a good idea. Especially since cracks in the area of the main cap bolts or stripped threads are unfortunately common to 312s.

It is standard bore.  I am going to remove the caps tonight and take a look and then next week get it cleaned and magnafluxed.  Hopefully it is okay.  These are hard to find.

If you do happen to find a stripped main bolt, it may be fixable. Even a small not deep crack may not render the block un useable. If you do find something like that, come back to the forum, someone here may have methods to repair it..

I took it apart last night.  Could find any visible cracks around mains but will still get it fluxed and checked out.  I will keep you informed.
