When my 55 gets a Y block again I was planning on rebuilding a FMX and using a air cooled bellhousing to make it looks somewhat original but I just had A C-4 gone through and behind the 351 it has but thinking why spend the extra money and just use the C-4,will a C-4 hold up behind a 292 or 312.

C4's are a great little trans. I used a flat-o-matic kit. Used a lokar dipstick and linkage for the column shift and I use a stock ford-o-matic column to shift it. c4's have unlimited converter options and if you hang around enough mustang forums you can find good deals on transmissions.

It costs to buy the bell and starter to graft the C-4 to a Y but there are advantages. The C-4 is lighter and more efficent. As to strength, a friend runs a C-4 behind a 427 windsor with a 250 hp shot of nitrous with no problems in a Ranger Pickup. Pulls 1.34 60 foots and low 9 sec Et's.

He rebuilt the trans with a shift kit and extra clutch discs being careful using the available shinms to obtain the proper clearances.

A stock C-4 wll easily stand up to a good Y, and give you a first gear starts.

You probably will not save much money but I would go with the C-4.

I read the article in the tech section and noticed it was a special bellhousing and went on a case filled C-4,I have a rebuilt pan filled C-4 in it now that I would use.

I am using a pan fill C-4. Very little difference for street use. All of the internal componets (I believe) interchange. I believe my friend with the Ranger uses a pan fill.
