Harmonic Balancer Pull

Guys,

New to the board, but the information is priceless.  Long story short I picked up a very, low milage (5,700 to be exact) 272 ECG block stamp and I am going through it to clean it up and change gaskets ect. 

It came out of a large truck and has the large engine mount on the front and does not utilize the traditional side mounts.  I am using the side mounts and want to remove the front mount.  The only way to do this is to pull the harmonic balancer because there is no clearance with the forms of the mount.  The motor is on the engine stand and when I put the breaker bar on it the whole engine just turns and I am not sure what the best way to keep it from turning is?  I just don't want to damage the engine.  Any tricks/suggestions?

Hold the flywheel, there are tools for that, or use an impact wrench, or jam the flywheel teeth against a bell housing bolt.

You will probably have to use an impact wrench on the flywheel bolt. Trying to turn it by hand won't work. Then you will need to use a harmonic balancer puller to get the crank pulley off. Remember if you plan on using the motor in a car, you will need to change the oil pan and pickup tube to the longer one. You wil also need to use a 1/4" plug to plug the old dipstick tube location and use the front location near the timing cover. You will have to knock that plug out and use the car dipstick tube which is different from the truck.

Thanks guys for the tips, makes sense.  I am putting the motor in a traditional hot rod, the frame I made from scratch so shouldnt be any issues with using it as-is.

A trick you can do to keep the engine from turning is to remove a spark plug (cylinder on a compression stroke), take a long length of rope (diameter thar will fit through the spark plug hole) and insert it into the cylinder, as the engine compresses the bundle of rope it will stop turning and you can break the harmonic balancer bolt with a long breaker bar.

If you use Bob's method, make sure the engine is on the compression stroke on the cylinder you are going to pack the rope, or there is a possibilty of bending a valve or pushrod if itis on the overlap stroke.

if you dont have an impact, tap with a hammer, that way you are not trying to turn the crank, large rubber mallet if you have one, doesn't mar the wrenches. Chase the threads out of the balancer before intalling the puller and make sure you don't have a tapered end that can ruin the threads in the end of the crank. I have a special bolt I turned in the lathe to accomodate a pionted puller, I install without the washer. I also have a flat ended puller for this purpose.
