Build the 272 or 292 ?

I have both and just got thinking since a 272 could be bored to a 292 would it be cheaper to build the 272 since standard 292 pistons should be able to be found cheaper since most 292s will need to be bored,if I do some looking since I am not in a hurry I could find a set of old stock standard 292 pistons alot cheaper then new over sized new pistons. I still have not priced parts yet and maybe I am dreaming but just wondering if the 272 could be built a little cheaper.

It take a LOT of luck nowadays to find any size of 272 piston. I have found that piston prices are high whether stock or overbore so go with any size bore your block can handle. Prior to making this decision have your block(s) sonic checked to see how much bore they can handle. They can have a lot of core shift in the cylinders resulting in thin walls when bored. If you are not going for performance the 272 bored to 292 is a good solid base. But either one will do. Sometimes a block will cleanup without overbore but not often. I guess the main line here is to get the blocks sonic checked then make your decision which one to use. Chuck

Oversize 292 pistons shouldn't cost a whole lot different than standard 292 pistons. The cost to bore the 272 may offset any difference in the price of the pistons. Usually, the machine shops price to overbore is up to .060 over and anything larger costs extra.

I haven't looked recently but if anything I'd expect oversize pistons to be cheaper. When your only option is used blocks, how often can a standard size still be used? Not often. An oversize? Very often. Higher supply... but also higher demand, I would think.

I would go 292, dennis carpenter sells STD 292 pistons about  $100.00.Smile

I let Dennis Carpenter slip my mind. For a normal performance engine they should be fine. He's been selling sets for around $100 for quite a while. He is also good to deal with. Chuck

My theory is maybe a set of standard 292 pistons could be had cheaper if they were old stock and sitting around for years since most wore out 292s will need bored and someone wants them gone,I would imagine both the 272 and 292 will need to be bored so if I could scrounge for some NOS or NORS pistons much cheaper then brand new it would help the build budget some.

I went with boring out a 272 for my current build. It ran about 300$ for boring & tanking it. Now if I could just find the time to get back on it......
