Lawdogg when I got my '56 M100 (should be the same as a F100) with the Dana 44 Rear end I calculated the rear end ratio. My notes say "3.91:1" then it say "3.93:1 Approx". One of these numbers could be the one I calculated and the other could be the actual. Hope this helps a little.

one way to figure rear gear ratio is mark drive shaft and give the tire one full turn
counting the rotation of the drive shaft

Hey Lawdogg I just looked in my shop manual and it gives three ratios. One is 3.92:1 which is close to my calculation for the Dana 44 behind a 272 with the three speed. The other two are 4.27:1 and 4.09:1.

My 56 f100 with a 3 speed and 272 came with a 3:73 and it's stamped on the nomenclature plate.

You are counting the revolutions that the drive shaft makes in one turn of a tire. For example if the driveshaft turns 4 times in one turn of the wheel your gear would be about 4 to 1. Etc. I currently have a 3:80 in my 56 Fairlane and plan to put in a 4:10 (actually 4:9) in the spring. Chuck
