I am getting ready to install the 3 speed with OD and thought I would check out the solenoid by attaching a hot wire to it. Well it moves, but only moves about 1/16 of an inch.  How far is it suppose to move?

Someone else can chime in here but without actually taking a ‘good’ solenoid and testing it, I’m going to say at least a ¼ inch of travel and 3/8” sounds better.

Iowa,

IF I recall correctly, about 3/8" sounds right.

More importantly, how far does it move against the kind of mechanical resistance it encounters when installed? I had to build a special bench-test jig for 6V solenoids in order to select ones that would perform reliably in actual service. I also suspect a lot of NOS units are floating around that were originally defective, but merely got returned to the shelf instead of the manufacturer when they wouldn't work properly.

Iowa,

It should be added that (at least the ones on which I have worked) the pall out of the solenoid is spring-loaded so that it can "spring" into the next available notch when rotating.

By "rotating", I mean the geartrain rotating.   JLB
