I'm doing some winter projects, one is painting the engine the y-colors. I have a set of thunderbird covers I'd like to use, don't like the cork gaskets. Anyone have a part# or source for some better sealing gaskets? Also on the topic of better fitting, the plug wires stick straight up out of the cap, they run right into the firewall pinch seam on the 57/58. Who makes a set with a 90 degree boot at the cap?

The Best Gasket No is 18005RE you have to buy thenm through a distributor though, Tee-Bird products Inc is one of them, their part number I beleive is 6A506AR if that is the part number I am reading on the tag of the set I have here.

I have a set of reusable neoprene gaskets that I'm using now. I don't know who makes them, but at least we know they exist. Rono

Mac's has plug wires with 90 degree plug terminals.

As far as plug wires go, if you are interested in making your own custom set, Taylor makes a nice 8mm silicon universal wire set in different colors with any combination boot ends you want. You just have to invest in a plug wire cutting/stripping/crimping tool you can get pretty cheap at most part stores. Rono

Whats wrong with cork gaskets? I contact glue them to the rocker cover, use a bit of non hardening permatex and I have had them off and on at least 4 times ..never had a prob. Thats with the standard rocker covers.. Have done the same with my 360 MoPar with cast rocker covers - same no probs..

With the cork gaskets, glue to the valve covers and coat the engine side with grease. They will come on and off many times. Do the same thing with the ruber gaskets.

Neoprene valve cover gaskets are available from John Mummert. These are die cut from sheet neoprene and compress like cork but are definitely reusable because of their 'memory'. I use smears of gasket cement or weatherstrip adhesive to hold them in place on the valve cover and white lithium grease on the gasket surface that contacts the cylinder head to assure their future release from the surface. Many ways to do things... this has worked well for me.

I have cork gaskets from NAPA. They are glued to my T-Bird valve covers with silicone gasket maker Then I put a thin coat on the engine side & let it dry. Been on a off a bunch of times with no problems...

I wound up using the cork gaskets, I glued them to the covers with 3-M and greased the head surface lightly. I had them on the shelf so I went with them. Put some miles on this summer with no leaks. I guess I didn't like them from my racing days.
