I am just about to change my rear sump pan for a front sump pan and have read the previous posts on this subject. I still have a couple of questions. 1) should I drive the front dip stick plug up and out or down and out? 2) I assume that I can purchase a replacement plug somewhere for the rear dip stick opening? 3) can I reuse the rear dipstick and tube if it come out in one piece? Thanks.

drive it down and use it in the other hole.yes you can reuse your dipstick tube.

Mark I don`t know about a Yblock but on a 302/5.0 Ford when you change from front to rear sump, you have to change the oil pick-up location as well. Pete

I love this site! I just recently found a beat up piece of metal in the bottom of the pan and figured that I have to pull the whole thing apart to figure where this thing came from. It looked like a small freeze plug but I couldn't figure from where in this motor. It was the dip stick plug, no more worries.

The plot thickens! When I removed the old oil pickup tube from the oil pump I can see that the thin metal cup like washer on the pick up tube is not in good shape and the new pick up tube doesn't have one. The rubber seal inside the pump(its an aluminum pump) is not good either(how do you get it out). After a brief search on the web I found the seals available but could not find the washer. Any idea where to get one? When I put the new pan on and reconnect the pump will hand turning the pump tell me if its good to go. I read the previous post on oil pumps (yikes) so I hope mine is ok.

I can't think of a cup like washer. The seal for the tube at the pump are sometimes multipart metal and rubber. Maybe you are seeing the metal part? Some seals are only rubber. Use the seal however it came and you'll be fine.
I use a pick to pry the seal out.

Thanks Charlie, I think it makes sense now. I think that the outboard side of the metal/rubber seal became separated and was stuck on the pickup tube when I separated it from the pump. It looks like there is a corresponding metal portion on the inboard side of the seal. When I first got the car and motor I could see that the pickup tube had seen better days. It looked like it had got caught in an engine hoist mishap but when I removed the rear sump pan the issue became apparent. The rear sump pan was actually a converted front sump pan and the front sump pickup tube had been shortened (mangled). When they tried to align the shortened,I mean mangled, tube with the pump they wrecked the seal. I assume that I should just purchase a rubber replacement seal?
