I'm installing a new parking brake cable, pawl, & spring in my 58 custom 300 but can't figure out how the little spring installs. Anyone have a exploded drawing or photo on how it installs? Thanks

easyissy, as you know its not easy. I did it about 3 months ago and it took me a month of Sundays. At one point the spring flew across the garage and it took me two hours to find it. You have to kind of put the spring into place then slide the H shaped thing into place. The long end of the spring faces down the shaft on top of the crimped over section of the E brake housing that contains the shaft. The short end of the spring faces up the spring on top of the top leg of the H shaped piece. I seem to recall that I cut one leg shorter so that it wouldn" jam. (I see that Mac's have a replacement spring that I may order as my spring is old and weak - one end of the Mac's spring already looks pretty short). I also bent the short arm sideways because it seemed to want to jam on the side of the bracket. It seems to me that if the spring was wound in the opposite direction it would sit straighter on the H piece I have attached a photo. Its pretty small so I don't know if you can see.
Thanks

Thanks Mark! Your right that picture is kinda small. What I did was put the spring in first then the h shaped pawl went through the wound spring to hold it in place. The long section of the spring went on top of the crimped tube and the short section on the pawl as you explained. I'm using that new spring from Mac's and it seems the way I put it in the tension is not enough. I could be wrong. I see you removed yours from the car to do this. I was trying to do this under the dash which was such a pain in the you know what. I've ordered a parts catalog as I've heard they have exploded drawings of everything in it. Hopefully it does.

easyissy would it help the tension if you turned the spring over? I have a Mac's catalog and it shows a picture of the spring but not the installation. If there is another catalog let me know.

If i turn the spring around the short/long arms of the spring will be in the wrong location. The catalog I was talking about is the Ford parts catalog.

This is the image cropped from the parts catalogue of the part you are talking about. Not much help though it does suggest what orientation the spring is installed.

I have the parts catalogue that several people have, sell or give away.
The one I use for all this cutting and pasting I got from Dave Dare, who is a member on this forum though I can't remember his username. He is also one of the administrators on the square birds site.
He will give you link which will allow you to download it. It is a pretty hefty download but well worth it.
Daniel Jessup has the same catalogues on disc if you drop him a line. He is also a member of this forum.
