1955 F-100 Transmission

I would like to remove the transmission so I can finish removing all the South Dakota dirt and grease.  I have the truck up on a lift so have good access and can have the truck off the floor to any level that I need.

Will I be able to remove it without some type of lift or other device?  I don't know how much one of these weigh and don't want to underestimate the difficulty or the weight.

The easy answer is if in doubt get some help. I'm not quite sure if the manual three speed is the same as cars but with the all cast iron three speed there was no thought on making them light.

They can get caught up, get a buddy, do it right and don't wreak your back.

If I recall that would be a T98 4 speed. They are pretty heavy. I would get a buddy to help for safety. You could probably back out the bolts enough to get a feel for its weight before it is all the way loose and there is no turning back....

Fred, I swapped transmissions in my pickup about a year ago. I don't think my old transmission was as heavy as yours but I had to do it myself. Also I don't have a hoist. I took the swivel plate off of my floor jack and bolted on a scrap steel plate about 10" x 15" to make a homemade transmission jack. I strapped the transmission to the plate with a couple of ratchet straps. I stuck a couple of pieces of wood on each side of the transmission so it couldn't roll off. Also I did what fiftysixford did except I switched the transmission mounting bolts for longer ones 4- 6 inches so I could roll the jack and transmission back a few inches without it dropping. Once I was sure that the trans was going to stay on my jack I took out the longer bolts and lowered it as I rolled the jack back. I also used the same long bolts when I installed the new transmission.
