Best Type of Freeze Plug

Hi All;

So which is the better type freeze plug to use....brass or steel? Also, what about the threaded pipe plugs? I see both steel and stainless steel available. Any opinion on those?

There has been some thought that the plain steel welch (core) plugs have sacrificial anode benefit to them. I don't know about that. I would always use brass over plain steel, but nowadays stainless steel may be easier to get.

As for the secnd part of your question, I would stick with good quality steel threaded plugs over stainless as in the long term, galling may affect the stainless plugs. If you go with stainless make sure you use plenty of never seize, copperkote or something similar.

Besides being corrosion resistant, the stainless steel freeze plugs fit tighter in the block than the plain steel cup plugs and even much tighter than the brass plugs.  For the oil galley plugs I use the ‘black’ iron and shy away from the zinc coated pieces.  Also be sure to use ¼” NPT plugs with a 7/8” taper and not a ¾” taper built into them.  And use some form of sealer on all plugs.
