Fuel tank sending unit

My fuel gauge is not reading correctly. Took out the sending unit and it can move 5" above the flat bolt-in cover.

Is this normal?

Tank is about 6" in height. Float moves almost a foot total. With the gauge out of the tank and connected it will read full at the if arm moved to the top way avove the flat disc, and empty the otherway. Resistance is from 175 high to 90 low ohms and there is a suppessor mounted to the hook up.

You didn't mention if the sending unit was the original sender or a replacement. Many of the replacement senders are made to fit many different tank sizes and styles. From your description is sounds like an after market unit. You need to adjust the arm so that the float is slightly below the mounting flange for full and slightly above the bottom on empty. Usually these senders have vertical adjustment as well an arm length adjustment.

The unit was in a restored car I bought and it looked new. I tried to bend the arm with the float to travel the full resistance in only the 6" depth of the tank and was unable to do it. I contacted Tanks Inc who remanufacture tanks to stock demensions and they sell a sender specific for the 55/56 Ford tank. I asked them to measure a new one out of the box on it's travel and it was right at 6" so I bought one for $39.00. Since they are e-z to install  I'll report back on how it goes. Thanks for the help.

PS: The tank looked spotless inside and there was a reciept for the cleaning of it included with the car.
