Turn signal problem

I have a 1955 Ford with 6 Volt system.  With the head light or parking lights on when I use the turn signal, for example signal for a right or left turn the tail lights will flash for the right or left turn but also the opposite tail light will also flash but very, very lightly but it does show up at night.  When the head lights or parking lights are off there is no flashing of the opposite tail light.  Is this normal or do I have a wiring problem?  John

This sounds like you have an earth problem. Just clean all your earthing points from each light fitting. You may even find your headlights are brighter when you finish.

Yes rick, my 1st thought was earthing prob. same when you see cars with orange headlights = poor earth, particularly 6v.Smile

If your in the US, the "earth problem" is a ground problem. A bad ground. Run a temporary ground at each light and see if that corrects the problem. If it does , then take off the grounds one by one and when the problem reappears, then that is the light with the bad ground.



The ground problem could also be the light switch. Try the temporary ground thing with that.

If its not a ground problem, It could be your turn signal switch inside the column,On my 54 ford I had a similar situation happen, and took mine apart and cleaned the contacts and worked ever since...I know of others have had the same thing happen on their 50's ford's also, but sometimes its just wore out and you just have to replace the switch, Sometimes you can wiggle the turn switch handle and everything will be fine until you use the turn signals again,all the rear light's power runs through the switch so if it is dirty or worn out it can do funny things with the lights..
