Putting the finishing touches on a rebuilt 312 bored .060 over but else everything is stock. Just wondering what is the expected torque to turn the engine over in the rebuild stand. Seems a little tight when I adjusted the valves on the test stand. No spark plugs in holes. Is there a torque spec. for this. Joe C Dearborn Mi. 3X'sretired

Joe, If you used a rope rear oil seal it will be a little tighter but did you rotate the assembly as you added each new piston/rings as you went along. Since you are asking my assumption is its too tight. I think before you install it you should consider disassembly and checking without any rod/piston/rings and again as you add each. It might save time in the long run. Just an opinion. Pete

I have used 35 ft. lbs. as the figure for turning over a newly assembled engine.

Did you check to see if the cam turned freely after you installed it? Check ring end gap? Crank turned easily before pistions installed? Check valve to piston clearance? Plastigage the mains and the rods to confirm clearance?

I am using a new style neoprene seal from NPD for $29.00 and it turns under 35 ft pounds. Thanks Joe
