Any '55 and later Y block is a bolt in. Even a '54 will work, but there are a few differences, like radiator hose sizes and carb linkage.

With some drilling and tapping, an FMX bellhousing for a 302 can be used to bolt to the FOM. However, the flywheel, converter, and starter are not compatable, whether you try to use the '55 stuff or the 302. If you want to go 302, it's best to get the transmission that goes with it and swap both into the '55.

Alrighty I guess my next question should be what motors will bolt stright to the transmission?

You might want to also think about what changes in motor and trans mounts you would need to do if you put the 302 and it's transmission in the car. Mike

Where are you located?
I have a 272 that was running well when I took it out of my Merc. It has rebuilt heads with hardened valve seats. I'm in the Seattle area.
IMO, you're better off trying to find another Y-block or swap in a 289/302 with a compatible transmission. With the SBF you'd probably need to modify the driveshaft to fit.

Only the original y block will, They have their own distinctive bolt pattern.
