312 in a 54 Ford Frame, z-bar is 55/56 unit bracket ( 54 Ford ) with female receptacle does not line up to mount to the engine or the bell housing. Is there another bracket and if so anyone have one I can purchase.
Thanks,
Richard

From the pictures it looks like you are trying to mount the bracket on the rear of the bellhousing, and the proper location is on the front, actually it mounts to the engine on the flange that the bellhousing bolts to Carl

Carl has it right. The bracket mounts on the front of the flange on the back of the block.

Sorry guys I was not clear. The mounting is in front on the engine like you say but the female socket for the ball doesn't line up, its forward of the z bar ball by 3/4 of and inch. The only way it lines up is on the bell housing buk their is no attaching point. The mount/bracket is a 54 the z bar is a 56 which gives clearance for the exhaust manifold.

I am suspecting a mount from a 55/56 would work if anyone has one.

The bracket you have looks like the 55 56 brackets i have, measure from the flat part of the bracket to the center of the female hole and i will compare it to mine. Carl

Richard,  posable difference in 54/ 55 frame`s, and location of clutch arm bracket.  The 54 Merc has got a straight Z bar, (with dual exhaust)  and goes between exhaust pipe and firewall.  If you could hold the Z bar up to where it should locate at the engine, then get a measurement from engine flange to center of ball stud maybe the  rite female bracket could be found...  BTW,  Very nice engine compartment.  The ECZ C is visable in one of your photos.    54 Merc 312

That bracket is for a T Bird, The "S" designates sport as in the T Birds a sport car.

I had the same problem.I got a different year bracket to accomidate the linkage on my T Bird.

The next time I go to my local old junkyard I will look at the 54s that are in it and see if they have that bracket.

Richard,

I bought parts to convert my 57 Tbird to standard shift from the Fordomatic awhile back. Haven't started the job yet. The Z bar I have is straight. If we can figure that we have what the other needs, I will swap it if you want.

Richard. I just checked bracket I have and it is stamped with an S. I don't want to confuse the issue and there may be some difference in the 57 Bird arrangement. The Z bar itself isn't in an S shape but the straight portion is angled about 5 or 10 degrees.

I think the 57 cars used a different system, straight z bar Tbirds included. I also think the system I need is 55/56 passenger car. I also think the 55/56 T-Bird may differ from passenger cars.

Here are a few more pictures and measurements of the one I have here.

Thanks for the help

I have the bracket you need but really dont want to let it go,its part of a stick shift setup that i have for a 55 56 Ford.I have some old y blocks that might have one mounted if i get a chance i will go over to where they are stored and check them tomorrow. Carl

Thank you Carl. If you have another that would be great, and if you can photo the thing so at least I know what to look for.

Richard

As I recall the main difference on the T-Bird linkage is the bracket that bolts to the frame. I sits about 2" higher off of the frame than the '54-'56 passenger car. When I first put the stick in my '57 Bird I used '54 passenger parts and made a 2" spacer out of channel iron to make the frame side fit. Engine bracket worked fine.
