I have read a ton of info on this build and cannot nail down the details. I am sure you guys have seen this quite a bit so I am hoping you can point me in the right direction.
I got a 56 F100 292 Yblock and I want to replace the current 3 speed with a more modern 3 speed from a 80's pickup. I have the yblock bellhousing from the 3 speed and all accessories.
I have read you need to cut up to 3/8" off this input shaft on this transmission to get it to work with the y block bellhousing but besides that it should bolt right together?
Questions:
Is the above thoughts accurate?
What bearing, clutch pressure plate do I use with this? I have all the stuff from the yblock and it is virtually brand new.
Anything I a missing?
Any links, builds or thought would be amazing. I am posting a pic of the transmission I am using.
Thanks,
Craig

Any insight?

I haven't tried this myself, but it looks to me like you will need some sort of plate adapter, perhaps the thickness of the extra length of the imput shaft.

Hmmm... '80s Ford truck... all synchro 3 speed? looks like a Ford toploader type... what engine was it in back of? any numbers on the tranny case?

It looks like a model 303 all synchro to me. They made them in truck and car versions, with differences in gearing and the input shaft and input shaft collar.

Yes I was told one thing and now studying the thing now I think it is the 303 and not really sure if this is going to work. It looks like it is a RAT transmission maybe from late 60's passenger car.

your trying to mate it to a 4 speed bell.you need 3 speed.also you shouldnt have to grind any off since a truck bell is deeper.measure.

craigibc (6/2/2012) I have the yblock bellhousing from the 3 speed and all accessories.
What you have pictured is a truck 4 speed bellhousing.

Ok that is good to know. This 4 speed came from a 56 f100 does it have a creeper gear in first?
If it does what do you recommend that will bolt in either a 3 speed or a 4 speed that will not require all the adapters to get it to work. I am trying to put the yblock in a traditional 27 model t.
I think what I picked up is not going to work as it is a column shift transmission.
Any advice?

Go find a car, standard shift bell. That will work with two drilled holes (Easy) and about 3/8 of an inch off the pilot. That trans will work with a column shift, all the trucks came that way!!

Wouldn't he need a truck 3 speed bell rather than a car bell. The car bell won't have the "ears" for the mounts (assuming the 56 bell mounts the same as a 61-64 truck)?

Grit's, he's trying to swap it into a T chassis. I wouldn't want the heavy (and harder to find) truck bell. the RAT tranny has a rear mount that works with a crossmember. The mounts are cheap and available. If he side mounts the engine that'd work.

Sorry, I totally missed the fact that he's putting the engine/tranny in a "T". In fact I've re-read the thread several times and still can't find it. Oh, well, trying to help.

Yes this is going into a 1927 model T that I am building. If I get the 3 speed car bellhousing is the install similar onto the 292? I am hoping to use this transmission with a floor shifter and I found some stuff that I read that this requires some linkage for use with the floor shifter.
I originally thought that I needed a toploader for the floor shift and now I think there is linkage and some type of shifter that I can use with this.
I was told this would work for me but I want something old school preferable some factory linkage that I can use my own shifter on the car.

You mention you're going for "old school". Have you considered using an "older school" '39 and earlier three speed transmission with the shifter in the center of the tranny like the truck transmissions?
Here's a link to an adapter over on the HAMB:

A transmission shouldn't be too hard to find.

Does Lokar make one for that tranny?

Trust me, you dont want a flathead 3 speed! A shifter from Jeep 3 speed, 1976-1979 CJ, is supposed to work in a 3.03 all synchro. The side shifter trunions need to be removed. It will center the shifter in the floor. This email is 3 or 4 years old, but he has done a lot of these shifter conversions and may have a Jeep shifter on hand: Nv James 65 @ aol . com . No spaces.

I just tried to email that guy and got a bounce. Is this a stock setup for the jeep? Maybe I could find one on ebay or in a local scrapyard.

Craig, yes it is the stock CJ setup for those years. Here is a picture the guy had back when he was listing the trans and shifters for sale on ebay. I did a little searching around this area but didnt get too far before some other project came up.

And it's a modern fully syncromesh toploader? By the way, there is another version that has close ratio gears. Mustang and Fairlane three speeds. David Kee's Toploader website will explain the differences. The gears do swap, I have one of each.
|
By 46yblock - 13 Years Ago
|
Yes, the 3.03 all synchro top loader first came out in 1963 trucks. Dont know how long it was in production. With some work the Mustang 3.03 gears, input shaft and collar will swap into the truck, I seem to recall.

Mike the big Block mustangs and Fairlane used a 2.40 low gear version. Same case. There's a long and short tailshaft version also. I think the truck and big cars used the long one while the Mustang/Fairlane version was shorter.

By 46yblock - 13 Years Ago

Frank, I forgot about the tailshaft differences until glancing down at the 3 speed in the barn this AM. The truck uses the short cased tailshaft. Craig's picture shows a long case, with the mounting pad. No mounting pad on the truck variety. The tailshafts may also be swappable. I used to have a Mustang 3.03 and was going to do some of the switching, but again, never got around to it. With Mustang gearing it would be almost as much fun as a 4 speed.
|
By pegleg - 13 Years Ago
|
You can swap, but not too easily. The output shaft has to match both the cluster and the tailshaft.

I am cool with the tailshaft length since this is a all custom job anyway. I have learned a ton about this transmission and the dude that sold it to me really did not know much about it at all.
Really excited about the advice and love the setup of the CJ shifter.
Does this one look right?
