Hi there everyone, I am attempting a 6v71 blower conversion on my bone stock rebuilt 272, it is currently in this car http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/Topic58583-5-1.aspx?Highlight=vauxhall matched to a 3 speed toploader and 4.3 ratio diff running electronic ignition and 2 of the 6 carbs you see. Last time out it ran a 15.9 down the quarter and I felt bad to have pushed it so hard so I'm hoping to drop the diff ratio and rely on the tourque these engines seem to make. The car needs to be finished for Chopped rod and custom show in newstead victoria Australia in october so keep watching this space for updates. I had the oppourtunity to buy a cragar 4/71 manifold but have never been excited about the proportions it has when on a Y. So enter 6v71 slightly larger than a 4/71 and what I think to be a more suited package than a 6/71. I have an old boat tripower manifold I plan to modify but that is subject to change. It is going to be driven by a multi v belt setup, I am considering using a a/c and steer pulley and having only 2 belts but feel free to share opinions, suggestions and criticisms. Paul.

I bought a 6V71 a while back. The rodding world up here aren't using them much but It seems to be because of the angled hold down bolts. In a conversion it shouldn't be a problem as you have to build a mounting plate anyway. An adapter plate could also be made to use the Cragar 471 manifold if its not too pricey. I havent seen one I could afford in years. I'll be interested to see your progress on the V belts I wanted to go that way for an "vintage" look. I also have picked up a B&M 144 and a 471 blower. I had planned to work my way up! Chuck Forgot to mention. I LOVE the Vauxhall gasser!

Love the Vauxall Gasser. It appears you are only running the two center carbs?? Kool car. Something we don't see over here.

Paul, now i know who owns the vauxhall, love the car! As the 6/71 are pretty long and you have plenty of space forward, the pulley drive shouldnt be a problem. That intake once machined flat to take mounting plate would make getting at bolts prettyy hard, well at least thats what it seems. Once you offer everything up in place the picture may be clearer, diecrest manufacturing in Vic can make front blower spout. If your up newcastle anytime come have a look at my 4/71 and see may give you an idea etc. regards bill.

Thanks for all the kind words, hope my attempt keeps you all interested.
Bill, I was actually hoping to come up with Dave (who bought that Mel blower manifold) but it didn't work out!
The car is also getting some ladder bars to rectify the solid rear. I'll post some pics of that too. As for all machine work I'm a fitter machinist who does a lot of tig welding (my nickname is "Tigger" amongst friends) so hopefully everything will be made by me.

Geez Bill I just did a double take. The wire belt guard looked like an old chain drive set up. Haven't seen one of those in way to many years! Can you post some measurements on the drive snout and what pullies you used and any modifications needed? Thanks, Chuck

Chuck, i used the wire mesh guard instead of flat aluminum so you can see most of it. Chuck, measurements wouldnt relate to anything unless you start with cragar intake. Depending on what manifold you modify to accept blower and where hole under blower lines up with hole in intake, then you can start making measurements actually relating to lower pulley position, then work upwards and back toward blower. I originally milled offy tripower to fit 5/8" flat aluminum plate and know that will work. regards bill.

Bill, I'm still trying to source a Crager style blower intake. In the meantime I will probably just put a 1/2" thick aluminum plate on top of a 4 barrell manifold. I'll post some more questions once I get to the actual fitting part. Chuck

Chuck, that sounds like a simple plan, should work ok.

Been flat out working on this thing! Sorry about the slow updates been posting on the hamb cause my new iphone has an application for it... the ladder bars are all in floor has been cut and shut. All the blower parts are on their way from the states. And I just ordered a pair of hurst pie crusts and let me tell you, Cody has been top notch for service and advice, only drama is my 15x8.5 American racing wheels won't work with the 7" wide tyres that are coming. So went to work searching my backyard..... Come up with a pair of 58 customline wheels for centers and a pair of 62 Buick 6.5" wide rims for the outers. They have the sexy smooth taper on the reverse side, can't put that to waste so reversed it'll be! Gotta trim the od of the centers to fit. Do that on the lathe tomorrow, and polish them ready for chrome. Anyway here's some pics. and no the cragars won't be on there too long!

Doing some investigation I felt i could sneak in a extra belt behind the standard pulley so I'll use the add on pulley for another y block project down the track.... For now I Turned this into this Crank drive. Then made this look a little more useful like this

Still have to machine the bolt up holes and the keyway. But this is how they look together.
also had a start on polishing those wheels, might not even chrome them for now! only because my wallet is hurting from being out of my pocket so much lately!

And here is a reference shot against the original snuck a extra belt behind so it'll be 4 belts now!

did a little more today! Made one hole offset 5' so that the pulley can be marked for tdc and never mixed up. Also got this plate the other day off a mate of mine. This is probably more special to me than the manifold it will be bolted to.

Thanks for posting the pictures. Great looking piece! It’s always nice to see those parts that are being hand crafted for our rides.

What are you going to do for the crankshaft damper?

gonna leave it out for now see how i go, on the 292 steel crank motor i'll have it all balanced together.

Very nice workmanship. You're very fortunate to have that equipment and those skills.

Definitely needs more than 4 carbs! Looks good for a hot rod motor, but I'm trying to make it look like a purposeful race car?!? Nearly forgot I had these covers, nows as good a time as any to put them on! Just gotta find my finned valley cover now....

Here is a little more, keyed the crank hub, finished the port plates and bolted them on (I stuffed up the fist set) and started marking out the blower top for the 6 carbs.
Little far spaced but I like the menacing home made look this spacing has with the carbs on.

Found my valley cover, gave it a quick polish on high edges. Started to blast the crank pulley, but not sure I like it? So I polished half..... What do you guys reckon polished, blasted or as machined (as in pics earlier), just to take into account, the blower and top stuff will be blasted only.... time is of the essence here!

The crank pulley is almost completely hidden by all the other front of engine stuff. It may not be worth the effort to polish it. Then again what can be seen will look great. Check the valley cover for clearence with the heads on. Most of them can't be removed with the heads installed but if you grind a relief in the cover by the intake runners you can make it removable without affecting the seal. Chuck Any thoughts on pulley production? I'm planning to put a 4-71 on mine.

I like the contrast with it blasted and polished.

So I polished it anyway... Looked good off the car, almost like an old chrome job. But put it on and i am going to blast it! Doesn't look right! Painted and re polished the valley cover, only to find it needed heaps of modifications just to make it fit not to mention get in there! Started to weld the base in the manifold but got stuck so started on the carb plate top.

Didn't really think it out, but it was probably a waste of time polishing that valley cover! It'll all be hidden.

Finished the blower top! Ready for blasting. I reckon it looks sweet, I am really happy with the way it has turned out. Sorry gave false info, almost finished it, still gotta put the mounting holes in and open the carb throats out.
