I just went and bought a triple grooved water pump pulley http://www.ebay.com/itm/270994384415?item=270994384415&viewitem=&vxp=mtr# on EBay and bought a double grooved alternator pulley from a local shop ($8 installed!!!). I'm hoping I can fix the alignment issue and the common "squealing" problem.

I've already aligned it as best I can, but I still get squealing when the compressor engages. The voltage is okay, but once it's in drive and the RPMS drop, so does the voltage.

I guess many guys have the same problem from the kit (Squealing). Everyone is saying it's caused by running the ONE belt to run ALL of the accessories. I'm hoping I can use one of the extra 2 grooves on the water pump to either run the alternator or compressor separately.

I'll get pics and keep everyone informed. I just wanted to start this thread so I can hopeully fix this problem with a and finally create a "sure-fire fix", once and for all Wink

These people have designed a belt set up to use individual belts for ac and alternator http://www.ndgearheadscruiserproducts.com/id22.htm

Here is a mod a fellow did to runn two belts fro ac and alternator

Mine is very similar to the 2nd link. But, I don't want to have to take everything off and cut any brackets. So I'm hoping with some spacing and an extra groove, I can run two belts. I'll get pics up when I finally get it right.

I'm hoping the belts will go as follows

Back belt: WP,CS,A/C,Alt

Front belt: WP,CS,Alt

I may make the back belt just WP,CS,A/C... We shall see

here is some pic of my setup using a 135 amp Ford 3 G alternator.

The alternator pulley is off a 87 Mustang.

The fan pulley is a C7OE from a 67 Fairlane I think it was a 390 engine.

The crank pulley is a dual belt truck pulley with a Y-block PS pulley attached to give 3 grooves for alternator and PS. I had to machine about 80 thou of the two pulleys so they would mate together and had the assembly balanced.

Marv, Very nice. I thought that the 87 mustangs were serpentine belts. When did they convert?

Frank

I think you are correct in the 87 having the serpentine belt.

I see the 86 and older use the v belts and 87 the serpentine so looks like 87 was first year of the serpentine.

The car must have been an 85 or 86 model then.

I only found the dual pulleys are on the AC cars.

Marv, That's interesting. I had a girl friend with a '79 mustang, 5 liter. One year only car, by '80 they'd gone to the 255 thingie. That car had a serpentine belt. I remember because I had to change the tensioner in a Florida parking lot with a screwdriver and a pair of Chinese water pump pliers. It was about a 110 degrees. You do not forget those jobs!!

This pulley was off a 4 cyl car. Did the 4 cyl have v belts still?? I don't know the newer stuff that well.

The pull-yur-part had it listed as a 87 however who knows all the history.

Marv. I honestly don't know. My daughter had an 84 or 85 mustang 4cyl. It did not have the serpentine setup. That would make sense then if it's a four banger pulley. It's a little hard to follow Ford some times.

The EBay seller refunded my account stating they were out of stock.. The search goes on :-/

apache,

Mummert makes a power steering pulley that adds on the crank pulley. maybe that'll be the start of a solutution for you.

By Apache - 13 Years Ago
How would that help me? I don't have power steering... The outer groove of the 2 groove alt lines up perfect with the outside of the crank pulley, but the water pump pulley is in the way, getting the 3 groove water pump pulley would put a groove on the outside (Closer to the radiator), which would make it a breeze.

I'll recheck mummert though for something i can use

Found one more http://www.ebay.com/itm/130440808374?item=130440808374&viewitem=&vxp=mtr#ht_2529wt_1141 gonna give it a shot.

Your best option is to install a two groove crankshaft pulley.

The part number is C3TZ-6312-C available from Carpenter $75.00.

or EARLY FORD V8 SALES 101 HOLLOW DR PIEDMONT, SC 29673 (864) 845-7878 $75.00

This is the crank pulley F500 and F600 trucks with 292's used. It uses the narrow belts like the 57's did and both sheaves are same diameter so will not have a conflict with speed ratios. The dual WP pulleys mostly are narrow belt also.

Here is the WP pulley I used

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1968-1969-Ford-Mustang-Mach-1-Cougar-C7OE-8509-D-Water-Pump-Pulley-289-302-351W-/221041391507?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item337717f793&vxp=mtr

The pulley you have found is a smaller diameter so will spin the fan faster, not a problem either.

Some of the y block water pump hub's are not set properly for a good belt alignment. I have had to occasionally press the water pump hub on further to align belts properly. Alignment is very critical using a dual belt set up to obtain proper tension on each belt.

Just trying to give you more options. Note what Marv said about the water pump flange. It's not that hard to move with a press.
